Borrowdale Graphite: The Deposit That Made Keswick a Pencil Town

Long before graphite was mixed with clay and fired into engineered cores, one English valley had access to unusually pure natural graphite that could be cut and used almost directly as a marking material. The deposit lay at Seathwaite in Borrowdale, in the Lake District of north-west England, and eventually helped turn nearby Keswick into a major pencil-making center.

The British Geological Survey describes the Seathwaite deposit as unique in the British Isles and with very few close parallels elsewhere. The graphite occurs in an unusual geological setting associated with igneous rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, rather than as the broad, low-grade seams that characterize many commercial graphite deposits. Mining is documented from at least the sixteenth century and continued intermittently until 1891, giving the deposit a working life that extended across several very different industrial eras.

The material was valuable before pencils became its most famous use. BGS records Borrowdale graphite in crucibles and moulds for metal casting, including military applications. The pencil industry emerged later, when the same mineral began to be valued for leaving a controllable black mark.

Early pencil making around Borrowdale differed fundamentally from the graphite-clay process that later became standard. Pure Cumberland graphite could be sawn into narrow pieces and enclosed in wood without first being ground, blended with clay, extruded, and fired. The material already had the structure needed for a writing core, although shaping fragile natural pieces consistently was difficult.

Direct use of natural graphite offered a rich mark but depended on a finite, exceptional deposit. Once manufacturers learned to grind graphite and mix it with clay, they gained control over hardness, uniformity, and supply. The Conté process in France at the end of the eighteenth century helped establish the graphite-clay core as the modern solution.

Borrowdale nevertheless remained central to British pencil making. BGS places the birth of the Keswick pencil industry at about 1790, linking it directly to graphite from the Seathwaite mine. Cottage production gradually developed into organized manufacturing, and Derwent traces the Cumberland Pencil Company’s first pencil to 1832. That date marks an important transition from local mineral resource to industrial identity: Keswick was no longer simply near a graphite mine; it was becoming a pencil town.

The relationship between mine and factory shaped the region. Graphite was extracted in Borrowdale, while Keswick supplied labor, transport, workshops, and eventually factory-scale production. The connection remained part of the town’s identity even after local graphite ceased to be the practical basis of modern production; the Pencil Museum still presents this history through a replica mine.

The geology also explains why Borrowdale became famous beyond its size. BGS describes graphite in nodules and pipe-like bodies associated with altered igneous rock, and geologists have long debated how such concentrated graphite formed. The deposit is therefore both an industrial site and a geological curiosity.

Collectors often encounter “Cumberland” on older British pencils and art materials, but the term can refer to geography, company identity, or raw-material heritage. A Cumberland-branded pencil was not necessarily made from Seathwaite graphite; industrial production increasingly depended on broader graphite supply chains while retaining the local historical identity.

Derwent has occasionally returned to archived Borrowdale graphite precisely because it is historically special rather than industrially routine. In 2012, the company produced Diamond Jubilee pencils using preserved Cumberland graphite from the Seathwaite mine. Derwent described the production challenge of cutting the natural graphite to an even 2.6 mm thickness before fitting it into cedar slats. The exercise effectively recreated an older manufacturing logic that modern pencil factories had long since replaced.

This shows how different natural-graphite pencils are from ordinary modern cores. A contemporary core is engineered from powders and binders to a target hardness and diameter; a Borrowdale-style core begins with a lump of mineral whose usable pieces must be selected and cut to shape.

The mine’s closure did not end pencil making in Keswick. Mining continued intermittently until 1891, but imported graphite and modern core-making methods replaced dependence on the original deposit. Derwent moved production to a purpose-built Lillyhall factory in 2008, while the museum and brand heritage kept Borrowdale central to the story.

For collectors, Borrowdale is a reminder that pencil provenance has layers. Graphite, wood, core manufacture, final assembly, and brand geography can all point to different places, so a country-of-manufacture mark tells only one stage of the chain.

Borrowdale matters because it belongs to the period before pencil manufacture became chemically and industrially standardized. It shows what a pencil looked like when a rare natural material could define an entire regional industry. Keswick’s later factories, brands, museums, and art materials all grew from that geological accident: an unusually pure body of graphite hidden in the Lake District and valuable enough to turn a mining valley into part of the global history of writing.
