From Prata to São Carlos: Brazil’s Two-Billion-Pencil Supply Chain

A pencil can look like a local object even when its production depends on a landscape hundreds of kilometers away. Faber-Castell’s Brazilian operation makes that relationship unusually visible. Its wood begins in managed forests near Prata, Minas Gerais, while large-scale pencil production takes place in São Carlos, São Paulo.
Brazil became central to Faber-Castell’s pencil business because wood supply could be organized at industrial scale. The company says it began planting trees for pencil production in the 1950s, using former pastureland rather than depending entirely on natural forests. That decision turned forestry from an external purchasing problem into part of the manufacturing system itself.
The species used in the company’s Prata forestry project is mainly Pinus caribaea. Faber-Castell describes roughly 10,000 hectares of planted forest in southeastern Brazil, far from the Amazon rainforest. Those forests feed the São Carlos factory with wood for pencils while also allowing the company to plan replanting, harvest cycles, and long-term material supply.
This matters because pencil factories need consistency more than spectacular wood. A slat must have predictable moisture, density, straightness, and machining behavior. Grooves need to be cut accurately, glued cores must remain centered, and the finished sandwich has to survive shaping, lacquering, stamping, and sharpening. Forestry decisions made years earlier can affect all of those later steps.
The scale in Brazil is remarkable. Faber-Castell’s Brazilian operation reports annual production of around two billion wood-cased EcoLápis pencils, with the São Carlos facility supplying both the domestic market and exports to dozens of countries. The company describes the Brazilian subsidiary as its largest operation and São Carlos as the center of the world’s largest EcoLápis production.
At that volume, tiny manufacturing choices become large economic decisions. A slightly thicker lacquer layer, a small increase in wood waste, or a higher percentage of off-center cores can become significant when multiplied across millions of pencils. Industrial pencil making is therefore a discipline of small tolerances repeated at extraordinary scale.
The wood does not travel directly from tree to finished pencil. Faber-Castell operates forestry and wood-processing activities in Prata before the material reaches São Carlos for pencil production. This separation is useful for understanding modern pencil manufacture: the factory that paints and finishes the pencil may not be the place where its wood began its industrial life.
Faber-Castell also presents the Brazilian forests as part of a broader environmental strategy. The company states that millions of pine trees are managed there, that new seedlings are planted each year, and that part of the managed area is left untouched as habitat for native wildlife. Its global wood-cased pencil production uses certified wood under FSC or PEFC systems.
For collectors, this gives a modern Brazilian-made pencil more context than a country stamp alone. “Made in Brazil” can indicate participation in a vertically organized supply chain involving forestry, wood processing, pencil manufacture, packaging, and export. That is a different historical story from nineteenth-century German factories that bought wood through external suppliers.
It also complicates the idea that a famous German pencil must be fundamentally German in every material sense. Faber-Castell remains a German company with deep roots in Stein, but its modern manufacturing network is international. Brazil is not merely a secondary export plant; it is one of the core places where the group’s pencil volume is produced.
That distinction matters when cataloging pencils. A collector should record manufacturing country separately from brand origin. Brand history, factory location, wood source, and market destination are four different pieces of information. Combining them into a single “country” field hides more than it reveals.
Brazil also offers a useful contrast with incense cedar traditions. Many premium pencils historically relied on cedar species valued for easy machining and clean sharpening. Faber-Castell’s Brazilian system instead demonstrates how plantation-grown pine can support enormous modern production when forestry, seasoning, slat preparation, machining, and quality control are designed around the material.
The result is less romantic than the image of a nineteenth-century pencil workshop, but more revealing about how pencils are actually made today. The object in a school bag may begin years earlier as a forestry plan, a planted seedling, a harvest schedule, and a carefully processed piece of wood.
That is what makes the Brazilian story worth adding to a pencil collection. It connects one of the simplest writing tools to land management, industrial logistics, certification, export networks, and high-volume manufacturing.
A pencil may be only a few grams of wood and graphite.
Producing two billion of them is a landscape-scale operation.
