Cretacolor Monolith: When the Whole Pencil Becomes Graphite

A wooden pencil gives graphite a handle.
The Cretacolor Monolith asks what happens when the handle disappears.
Instead of placing a narrow graphite core between two wooden slats, Monolith makes almost the entire pencil from the drawing material itself. Cretacolor describes the modern version as a 7 mm solid graphite pencil covered only by a thin layer of varnish. The result still looks and feels like a pencil, but structurally it is much closer to a graphite stick shaped for precise handling.
That difference changes how the tool can be used.
With an ordinary wooden pencil, only the exposed point can touch the paper. Even if the core is soft and wide, the wood limits the useful drawing surface. A Monolith can still be sharpened to a conventional point, but the artist can also use the broad side of the graphite body once enough varnish has been removed.
One tool can therefore move from a thin contour to a wide tonal field without changing pencils.
This is the central advantage of the woodless format.
It is not simply that there is “more graphite.”
The geometry of the usable material is different.
A traditional 2B drawing pencil may contain a core around a few millimeters wide. Monolith has a graphite body about 7 mm across. Turned on its side, it can cover paper much faster. Rotated back toward a sharpened edge, it can return to controlled detail.
That makes it especially useful for drawings that alternate between structure and mass.
A portrait can begin with a light outline, move into broad cheek and hair shadows, then return to sharper accents. A landscape can use the side for sky or distant tone and the point for branches or architecture. The pencil remains the same; only the contact area changes.
Cretacolor currently offers Monolith in six grades: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, and 9B.
The absence of hard H grades makes sense.
Woodless graphite is most distinctive when the artist wants a generous deposit of material. Softer grades create darker marks and are better suited to broad shading, expressive sketching, and large tonal transitions. HB keeps some control, while 8B and 9B move the tool toward dense, soft graphite drawing.
The grading still works on the familiar graphite principle, but the handling changes because so much more material can contact the paper at once.
A 6B wooden pencil and a 6B Monolith do not automatically feel like equivalent tools.
The grade describes the core formulation.
The body describes how that formulation reaches the page.
This becomes obvious when making a gradient.
With a normal pencil, broad tone often comes from repeated strokes, cross-hatching, or using a long exposed point at a shallow angle. With Monolith, a large surface of graphite can meet the paper directly. A broad grey field can appear in fewer passes.
That speed can be useful, but it also demands control.
Soft graphite can become shiny when heavily burnished. Large deposits can smear. A broad Monolith stroke can fill the tooth of the paper quickly.
The tool rewards light pressure.
It is often better to build several thin layers than to force a dark value in one pass.
Paper matters here just as much as grade.
A smooth paper emphasizes the Monolith’s ability to create dense, even passages and sharp edges. A rougher drawing paper catches graphite on its raised texture, creating broken, granular tone. Because the contact area is large, that texture can become a visible part of the drawing very quickly.
This makes Monolith useful for testing paper itself.
Use the same 4B on smooth Bristol, medium drawing paper, and rough watercolor paper. The graphite is unchanged, yet the side strokes can look like three different media.
The pencil is also more efficient in a literal sense.
Cretacolor notes that a solid Monolith has no wooden casing, so essentially the whole body is usable drawing material. Even graphite removed during sharpening can be saved and used for effects.
That possibility is easy to overlook.
Graphite dust can be spread with a brush, cloth, paper stump, or other blending tool. It can establish a soft background tone before sharper pencil work is added. In a wooden pencil, shavings are mostly waste. In a woodless pencil, the material removed by sharpening is still graphite.
The absence of wood creates a trade-off, however.
Wood does more than provide a grip.
It protects a fragile core.
A conventional pencil can survive impacts that might crack a large exposed graphite body. A Monolith therefore benefits from more careful storage, especially in a case where it cannot strike harder tools.
The thin varnish protects the user’s fingers and gives the pencil a cleaner surface, but it cannot provide the structural reinforcement of a wooden barrel.
That vulnerability is part of the design.
The artist gains direct access to a large mass of graphite and gives up some protection in return.
For collectors, woodless pencils deserve their own category.
They are easy to misfile as oversized graphite sticks, yet products such as Monolith preserve important pencil characteristics: a cylindrical hand-held form, printed identification, graded variants, a sharpenable point, and a finish designed for direct handling.
At the same time, the missing wood makes them mechanically different from almost every traditional pencil in a collection.
That difference is worth documenting.
Record the diameter.
Record whether the body is fully varnished.
Photograph the end before sharpening.
Compare the imprint placement between generations.
Keep one unsharpened example if possible, because sharpening permanently changes the visual geometry of a solid-graphite pencil more dramatically than it changes an ordinary wooden one.
A used example is equally valuable.
It shows how the varnish wears, how much of the side the artist exposes, and whether the pencil was treated as a precision point or as a broad graphite block.
Wear becomes evidence of technique.
Cretacolor itself has an unusual history for a pencil maker. Its lineage includes Carl Brevillier’s Zeus pencil factory, founded in Vienna in 1863. The modern Cretacolor story took shape when pencil collector Hans Wolfgang Hromatka acquired the Hirm pencil factory in 1996 and later combined that tradition with Brevillier-Urban. The company explicitly lists Graphite Monolith among the innovations developed under this modern identity.
That makes Monolith more than an odd format in the catalog.
It represents a company looking at one of the oldest pencil materials and changing the architecture around it.
Graphite itself was not new.
The innovation was deciding that the core no longer needed to hide inside wood.
This is why the Monolith fits the collection differently from another premium HB or 2B.
The Castell 9000, Hi-Uni, Grafwood, and similar pencils refine the traditional graphite pencil.
Monolith changes the ratio between casing and core until the casing almost disappears.
What remains is a pencil reduced to its drawing substance.
Sharpen it, and it behaves like a pencil.
Turn it sideways, and it behaves like a graphite stick.
Scrape it, and it becomes graphite powder.
Few pencils reveal so clearly that form can change what the same material is capable of doing.
