Caran d’Ache Grafwood: Fifteen Shades of Graphite

Most graphite pencil ranges tell you the grade with a small stamp near the end of the barrel.

Caran d’Ache Grafwood makes the grade part of the entire object.

Lay several Grafwood pencils beside one another and the bodies move from pale gray toward almost black as the leads become softer. The lacquer is not simply decoration. It is a visual scale.

That decision makes Grafwood unusually easy to recognize, but the more interesting engineering is hidden inside.

The range currently runs through fifteen hardnesses from 4H to 9B. Caran d’Ache also changes the diameter of the graphite core across that range, from about 2.1 mm at the harder end to as much as 3.6 mm for softer grades.

That is a practical response to a basic problem.

Hard graphite is used for thin, controlled lines.

Soft graphite is used for darker marks, broad shading, and heavier deposition.

If every grade used exactly the same core diameter, the softest pencils would not take full advantage of the way artists actually use them.

Grafwood changes both composition and geometry.

The softer the pencil becomes, the more graphite the user can place on the page.

This is one reason the range feels more like a drawing system than fifteen differently labeled writing pencils.

Caran d’Ache divides the range by use.

The soft 9B–3B end is intended for dense, regular strokes and broad shading.

The middle grades around 2B through H suit hatching and layered drawing.

The harder 2H–4H end is aimed at precise fine lines, including technical drawing and scientific illustration.

That division is familiar to anyone who draws with graphite, but Grafwood communicates it physically.

Pick up a very soft grade and the thicker core is visible immediately after sharpening.

The hard grades expose something noticeably finer.

The barrel color reinforces the same progression before the pencil ever touches paper.

Few graphite ranges make hardness this legible.

Grafwood belongs to Caran d’Ache’s Graphite Line, introduced in 2006 as a collection devoted to different expressions of black.

The company itself is much older.

It began in Geneva in 1915 as the Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons.

In 1924 the company took the name Caran d’Ache under Arnold Schweitzer.

The name has an unusually appropriate linguistic history for a pencil manufacturer. Caran d’Ache is derived through Russian from a term meaning “black stone,” referring to graphite.

A century later, graphite is still one of the clearest expressions of the brand.

Caran d’Ache continues to manufacture its drawing and writing products in Geneva, and Grafwood is sold as a Swiss-made professional graphite range.

That makes it useful in a collection for another reason.

Many famous graphite pencils come from Germany, Japan, the United States, or the Czech lands.

Grafwood gives Switzerland a distinct place on the same shelf.

Its design language is also very different from the traditional model-specific identities of those countries.

The Faber-Castell Castell 9000 has its dark green lacquer.

Staedtler Mars Lumograph has its blue body.

Mitsubishi Hi-Uni is deep burgundy.

Tombow MONO 100 is black with restrained gold detailing.

Grafwood avoids one fixed signature color.

Its signature is the transition itself.

A single Grafwood pencil can look almost understated.

A full set explains the design.

The fifteen barrels become a grayscale.

That makes the box especially important.

With many pencil sets, the packaging merely holds twelve or twenty-four identical-looking pencils distinguished by end stamps.

With Grafwood, the open assortment is part of the visual concept.

The grades can be read from left to right almost like a value chart.

For an artist, that is practical.

For a collector, it makes the set more interesting than the individual pencil.

The construction remains traditional.

Grafwood is a hexagonal wood-cased pencil made from premium FSC-certified cedar.

The hexagonal form prevents rolling and gives predictable finger positions.

Cedar provides the familiar combination of low density, straight grain, and easy sharpening that high-quality wooden pencils depend on.

There is no unusual mechanical system.

The innovation is in how a very conventional pencil architecture is tuned across the range.

The changing core diameter deserves closer attention because it affects sharpening.

A 4H Grafwood and a 9B Grafwood may fit the same sharpener, but they do not present the blade with the same problem.

The hard pencil has a relatively narrow, abrasion-resistant core.

The soft pencil has a wider, more fragile core that can lose material quickly.

An aggressive long-point sharpener that works beautifully on harder grades can expose too much soft graphite on a 9B.

A knife gives more control.

A short-cone sharpener can provide more support.

The correct point geometry changes with the grade.

This is not unique to Grafwood, but the large change in core diameter makes it especially visible.

The 9B is a useful example.

A 9B pencil is not simply an HB that writes much darker.

The entire behavior changes.

The graphite deposits quickly.

The point rounds rapidly.

A broad side stroke becomes practical.

Pressure becomes less necessary.

The mark approaches the visual density of a graphite stick while the wooden casing keeps the material clean and controllable.

Grafwood’s thick soft cores make that transition explicit.

At the opposite end, 4H behaves more like a precision instrument.

The point survives longer.

The mark stays narrow.

The paper receives less graphite.

Pressure can create indentation before the line becomes truly dark.

This makes 4H useful for construction lines, controlled hatching, diagrams, and detailed technical work.

The physical distance between 4H and 9B is therefore much greater than the thirteen letters and numbers between them suggest.

A full Grafwood set is a compact demonstration of how much a “graphite pencil” can vary while keeping the same basic wooden architecture.

The lacquer system helps when working with several pencils at once.

Artists often place a group of grades on the table and switch between them rapidly.

If every pencil has the same body color, the user must read the small grade imprint each time.

Grafwood reduces that problem.

The grade is still printed, but the whole barrel gives a visual clue.

A pale pencil is hard.

A dark pencil is soft.

After enough use, the color itself becomes shorthand.

Color coding is usually associated with colored pencils.

Grafwood uses color coding for graphite.

The pencils all produce shades of gray-black on paper, yet the barrel carries information about how that black will behave.

The outside predicts the inside.

This is more informative than decorative lacquer chosen only for brand recognition.

Grafwood also sits inside a wider Caran d’Ache graphite family.

That broader system helps explain why Grafwood is not presented primarily as an office pencil.

It is one component in a family for exploring graphite as an artistic material.

Grafwood preserves the classic pencil form while stretching its hardness range.

For collectors, those neighboring products make an interesting comparison.

A Grafwood 6B, a Technalo 6B, and a Grafstone 6B may share a grade label, but they are not equivalent tools.

Grade notation tells only part of the story.

Binder formulation, core dimensions, water solubility, casing, and intended technique all change the result.

This is another reason not to treat HB scales as universal physical standards.

A manufacturer’s 2B is a position within that manufacturer’s own material system.

Grafwood is best understood as a complete internal scale.

Comparing two adjacent Grafwood grades is often more meaningful than assuming its 2B must behave exactly like another company’s 2B.

That makes a systematic test useful.

Start with 4H and make the same line at the same approximate pressure.

Repeat through every grade.

Then make a second sample using the side of the point.

Finally make a small shaded rectangle with each pencil.

The first test shows darkness and line width.

The second reveals how readily the core produces broad graphite coverage.

The third reveals the transition in handling and tonal density.

A full Grafwood set makes these changes unusually easy to see because the barrel sequence mirrors the paper sequence.

For cataloging, I would record more than the stamped grade.

Photograph the whole set in order.

Record the core diameter if possible.

Note the exact barrel shade and typography.

Keep the metal or cardboard packaging.

Caran d’Ache changes packaging over time, and a pencil that remains technically similar can still belong to a different production period.

Sets are particularly worth preserving intact.

Separating a single grade from a fifteen-pencil sequence removes part of the design logic.

Wear also becomes interesting.

Because the bodies differ in shade, a heavily used set often reveals which grades the owner preferred.

The short pencils tell a story immediately.

An artist may consume 2B and 4B while barely touching the hardest grades.

A technical illustrator may produce the opposite pattern.

A used set becomes a record of drawing habits.

That is something a pristine box cannot show.

Grafwood is also a useful counterexample to the idea that premium pencils need elaborate decoration.

There is no oversized ferrule.

No replaceable eraser.

No unusual barrel profile.

No complex historical imprint.

Its visual identity comes from a restrained system: cedar, hexagonal body, capped end, grade-specific gray lacquer, and a changing graphite core.

The sophistication is in coordination.

Each individual decision supports the grade scale.

That is why the model deserves its own place beside more famous German and Japanese pencils.

It represents a particularly Swiss approach to the graphite pencil: precise, systematic, visually ordered, and technically quiet.

The most memorable feature is not one pencil.

It is what happens when all fifteen are placed together.

From 4H to 9B, the barrels darken.

The cores widen.

The marks deepen.

The same wooden object gradually changes its purpose from fine technical line to broad black shading.

Grafwood turns the graphite scale into something you can see before you sharpen the first pencil.
