Caran d’Ache Prismalo: The Pencil That Learned to Become Watercolor

A colored pencil normally ends where the line is drawn.

Prismalo was designed so the line could keep changing.

Caran d’Ache introduced Prismalo in 1931 and describes it as the world’s first water-soluble colored pencil. The idea was simple to explain but technically important: make a colored-pencil core that behaved normally when dry, then released and moved when touched with water.

That turned one tool into two.

Used dry, Prismalo works like a firm colored pencil. It can produce hatching, outlines, controlled shading, and precise detail. Add a wet brush, however, and the deposited pigment begins to dissolve into a wash. Pencil strokes can soften, merge, spread, or disappear almost completely into watercolor-like fields.

That distinction makes Prismalo very different from a permanent artist pencil such as Polychromos.

Polychromos is designed to keep the dry mark stable.

Prismalo is designed to let the dry mark become a starting point.

The engineering challenge is in the core. A water-soluble colored pencil still has to survive sharpening, hold a fine point, deposit pigment evenly, and remain strong enough for ordinary drawing. At the same time, its binder system must allow water to mobilize the color after it reaches the paper.

The modern Prismalo core is deliberately thin, hard, and resistant. Caran d’Ache lists its diameter at 2.95 mm. That relatively fine core makes sense for a pencil whose traditional strengths include illustration, hatching, graphic work, and precise watercolor drawing.

A soft, oversized core would behave differently.

It would release more material quickly, but it would also sacrifice some of the controlled line that makes Prismalo distinctive.

The pencil therefore sits in an interesting position between drawing and painting.

You can draw a tree branch with a sharp point, then dissolve the shadows beneath it.

You can hatch a sky, then pull water through the marks until the individual strokes become a wash.

You can build a dark edge with repeated dry layers and leave it untouched while dissolving lighter neighboring areas.

The same color can appear as a line, texture, gradient, or transparent stain depending on how much water is introduced.

This is why watercolor pencils should not be evaluated only by making dry swatches.

A dry swatch shows pigment strength.

It does not show how the pigment behaves after activation.

A more useful test starts with three areas of the same color.

Leave the first dry.

Brush clean water over the second.

For the third, touch a wet brush directly to the pencil tip and transfer the dissolved color to paper.

The results may look surprisingly different even though all three came from one pencil.

The first preserves the paper grain and the mechanical texture of the pencil stroke.

The second reveals how completely the drawn particles disperse.

The third behaves more like color taken from a tiny solid watercolor source.

That third technique is especially revealing because it shows that the wooden barrel is not the only way to use the material.

The pencil can function as a portable paint pan.

Caran d’Ache itself recommends techniques such as watercolor washes, hatching, and lifting color from the pencil with a wet brush.

Paper becomes critical once water enters the process.

Ordinary writing paper may buckle, pill, or weaken quickly. A proper watercolor or mixed-media paper gives the artist more time to move pigment without damaging the surface.

Its sizing also affects how far the color travels.

On an absorbent sheet, water may pull pigment into the fibers quickly.

On a more heavily sized surface, the wash can remain mobile longer.

This means Prismalo does not have one fixed behavior.

The pencil, water, brush, and paper form a system.

Water quantity matters too.

A barely damp brush may soften the pencil texture while leaving most strokes visible.

More water can create a broader wash.

Too much water can dilute the color dramatically or carry pigment beyond the intended area.

The artist is not simply “erasing” pencil texture with water.

They are controlling concentration.

That is one reason watercolor pencils can be useful for travel and field sketching.

A set of pencils provides precise dry drawing without the need to open paints immediately. Later, a small brush and water can transform selected areas. The artist can work in stages and choose which marks remain graphic and which become painterly.

Prismalo’s history is especially interesting because Caran d’Ache introduced the idea so early.

The company itself had been founded in Geneva in 1915 as the Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons and adopted the Caran d’Ache name in 1924. Only seven years later, Prismalo arrived.

The product therefore belongs to the company’s early period of technical experimentation, not to a recent attempt to expand a mature colored-pencil catalog.

Its 1931 introduction also predates the modern assumption that watercolor pencils are a standard art-store category.

Someone had to establish that category.

Prismalo did.

The modern range preserves several characteristics that fit its original identity. Caran d’Ache describes the lead as highly pigmented, water-soluble, lightfast, thin, and resistant. Current pencils use premium FSC-certified cedar and are manufactured in Switzerland.

The range is available in sets extending to eighty colors.

That number is smaller than the 120-color ranges found in some professional colored-pencil families, but watercolor use changes how palette size works.

Water makes color mixing easier.

Two pencil colors can be layered dry and then activated together.

One wet color can be brushed into another.

Pigment can be lifted from different tips onto a palette and mixed before reaching the paper.

The palette is therefore not limited to the printed color names.

This is one place where watercolor pencils differ fundamentally from graphite.

Graphite grades form a mostly linear sequence from hard/light to soft/dark.

A watercolor-pencil set forms a network.

Blue plus yellow can become green.

Red can be diluted toward pink.

A dark color can become a pale wash simply by increasing water.

One pencil can produce a much wider tonal range than its dry barrel swatch suggests.

For collectors, that makes used examples especially informative.

A dry, unsharpened Prismalo preserves the factory finish, color number, imprint, end seal, and packaging period.

A working pencil reveals something else: how the core sharpens, how fine a line it holds, how the pigment dissolves, and whether older material still activates evenly.

Vintage water-soluble pencils deserve cautious testing.

Binders can age.

Wood can dry.

Pigments may remain stable while the way the core releases material changes.

A decades-old pencil may therefore be historically valuable even if it does not behave exactly like a modern one.

Boxes are particularly worth preserving.

Watercolor-pencil packaging often explains techniques that are not obvious from the pencil alone. Illustrations may show wet brushes, washes, color charts, or claims about water solubility and lightfastness. Those details reveal how manufacturers taught customers to understand a relatively unusual material.

For Prismalo, packaging can also help document changes in logo, typography, color assortment, and corporate presentation across a very long production life.

The product has existed for more than ninety years.

That makes it unusually good for chronological collecting.

An early Prismalo belongs to the birth of the watercolor-pencil category.

A mid-century example records how the concept became established.

A modern Prismalo shows that the underlying idea still works without needing to be reinvented.

The most interesting comparison is not between Prismalo and another watercolor pencil.

It is between Prismalo dry and Prismalo wet.

In the first state, the artist is drawing.

In the second, the artist is painting.

The transition happens with a brushful of water.

That small transformation is what made the pencil new in 1931, and it is still what makes Prismalo worth collecting today.
