Are People and Consciousness as Real as Atoms?

Atoms seem physically real.
People are made of atoms.
Does that mean only the atoms are truly real?
Is a person merely:
a convenient way of talking about particles?
This is the problem of levels of reality.
The Reductionist Temptation
If a person consists entirely of physical matter, one might say:
Only the fundamental particles are real.
Everything else is shorthand.
This is eliminative reductionism.
Composition Does Not Imply Elimination
A hurricane is made of:
air molecules.
That does not make the hurricane unreal.
The pattern matters.
Person as Pattern
A person is not one atom.
A person is an organized process involving:
- body,
- memory,
- goals,
- relationships.
The organization persists while many component atoms change.
Material Turnover
Atoms in the body are continuously replaced through metabolism.
Yet personal identity persists.
This suggests the person is not identical to one fixed set of particles.
Ship of Theseus
The classic Ship of Theseus asks:
If every plank is replaced, is it still the same ship?
Human biology makes this more than a thought experiment.
Identity often depends on continuity of organization.
Higher-Level Ontology
A higher-level entity exists when organized components form a stable pattern with distinctive:
- properties,
- causal roles.
Examples:
- cells,
- organisms,
- persons.
Weak Emergence
Many higher-level properties are weakly emergent.
They arise from lower-level interactions but require higher-level concepts for useful explanation.
Temperature Again
Temperature is not a property of one molecule in the ordinary thermodynamic sense.
It belongs to ensembles.
Yet temperature is fully real.
Life
Life is not one molecule.
It is organized:
- metabolism,
- replication,
- regulation.
We do not conclude:
life is unreal
because chemistry realizes it.
Consciousness
The challenge becomes sharper with consciousness.
Subjective experience is not merely an external pattern.
It is what reality feels like from inside a system.
Phenomenal Reality
Pain is real in a direct first-person sense.
You can doubt:
what caused the pain.
It is harder to doubt:
that pain is occurring.
This gives consciousness unusual epistemic status.
Ontological vs Epistemic Priority
Consciousness may be epistemically immediate without being ontologically fundamental.
What we know most directly need not be what reality is fundamentally made of.
Physicalist View
A physicalist says:
consciousness is a physical process or property realized by the brain.
Then experience is as real as:
neural activity.
They are not competing entities.
Identity Theory
If pain is identical with a neural process, the question:
“Which is more real?”
is misguided.
They are one event described differently.
Functionalism
Functionalists define mental states partly by causal roles.
A belief is real because it:
- interacts with other states,
- guides behavior.
Mental reality is functional.
Eliminative Materialism
More radical theorists have suggested some folk-psychological concepts may eventually be eliminated.
Perhaps:
belief, desire
are like obsolete scientific categories.
Churchland
Paul and Patricia Churchland are associated with eliminative materialist arguments.
They question whether everyday mental vocabulary maps cleanly onto neuroscience.
But Elimination Is Selective
Even if some concepts are revised, it does not follow:
persons are unreal.
Science often refines rather than destroys higher-level ontology.
Multiple Realizability
A mental state may be realized by different physical systems.
This supports its reality as a higher-level functional kind.
Software Analogy
The same program can run on different hardware.
Software is not unreal because it requires physical implementation.
Its organizational pattern is real.
Real Patterns
Dennett’s concept of real patterns is useful.
A pattern is real when recognizing it improves:
- prediction,
- explanation,
- compression.
Persons are extraordinarily rich real patterns.
Chess Position Analogy
A chess position is physically instantiated by:
wooden pieces, pixels.
Its strategic properties are not visible at the atomic level.
Yet checkmate is real.
Causal Powers
Can higher-level entities cause things?
We say:
the person opened the door.
At the molecular level:
muscles contracted.
Both explanations can be true.
Causal Exclusion
A reductionist worries:
If molecules caused the door movement completely, what causal work remains for the person?
This is the causal-exclusion problem.
Noncompetition Across Levels
The person and molecules are not two separate causes.
The person’s action is realized by molecular processes.
Causal explanations at different levels need not compete.
Hurricane Analogy
A hurricane breaks a window.
Molecules also break it.
We do not need two independent causes.
The hurricane is the organized molecular event.
Downward Causation
Higher-level organization can constrain lower-level dynamics.
Example:
cellular structure channels chemical reactions.
This need not introduce new forces.
Constraint is enough.
Biological Constraint
DNA, membranes, feedback networks
shape which molecular interactions occur.
Organization matters causally.
Persons as Causal Systems
A person’s:
- plan,
- intention
can organize bodily action.
The physical implementation does not eliminate the higher-level cause.
Explanation Depends on Question
Why did the hand move?
Possible answers:
- motor neuron fired,
- she wanted water.
One is mechanistic.
One is rational.
Both are explanatory.
Intentional Stance
Dennett’s intentional stance predicts behavior by treating a system as having:
- beliefs,
- desires.
For humans, this stance is remarkably successful.
That supports mental-level realism.
Is the Intentional Stance Merely Useful Fiction?
Dennett resists simple fictionalism.
Stable predictive patterns can be objectively real even if they are not fundamental particles.
Social Reality
Persons are also socially embedded.
Identity includes:
- name,
- roles,
- relationships.
Some aspects of personhood are institutional.
Legal Person
The law treats humans as:
persons with rights.
This is not reducible to anatomy alone.
Legal personhood is socially constructed but real in institutional systems.
Narrative Self
A person’s self-conception includes autobiographical narrative.
Narrative organization affects behavior.
A constructed self can be causally real.
Construction ≠ Fiction
The immune system is constructed developmentally.
A city is constructed socially.
Construction does not mean unreality.
The Self as Process
Many philosophers and cognitive scientists treat the self as a process rather than substance.
Continuity can exist without an indivisible core.
Bundle Theory
Hume described the self as a bundle of perceptions.
Modern versions emphasize:
dynamic integration.
The absence of a metaphysical pearl does not eliminate the person.
Buddhist No-Self
Some Buddhist philosophies deny a permanent independent self.
Yet they still recognize:
causal continuity, suffering.
No-self need not mean no person whatsoever.
Personal Identity
What makes someone the same person through time?
Candidates include:
- bodily continuity,
- psychological continuity,
- memory.
No single criterion is unproblematic.
Psychological Continuity
Lockean traditions emphasize memory and continuity of consciousness.
This makes identity informational and psychological.
Brain Injury
Severe memory loss can alter identity.
But the person may remain legally and biologically continuous.
Identity has multiple dimensions.
Split Brain
Split-brain cases challenge the idea of one indivisible subject.
Personhood may depend on integrated cognitive organization.
Consciousness as Emergent Reality
If consciousness emerges from neural organization, it can be real without being fundamental.
Temperature shows the general pattern.
The hard problem adds a special explanatory challenge.
Strong Emergence
If consciousness has irreducible causal properties, it may be strongly emergent.
This is more metaphysically demanding.
Evidence is contested.
Panpsychist Alternative
Panpsychism says experience is present fundamentally.
Then people do not create consciousness from nothing.
They organize it into complex subjects.
Illusionist Alternative
Illusionism denies some traditional phenomenal properties.
But it still accepts real:
- cognitive states,
- reports.
Even illusionism does not make persons vanish.
Physics Is Not Privileged in Every Explanation
Fundamental physics answers:
what basic interactions occur.
It does not directly answer:
- why a government changed policy,
- why someone apologized.
Higher-level sciences track different regularities.
Special Sciences
Biology, psychology, economics
study real patterns at higher levels.
Their concepts need not reduce neatly to fundamental equations.
Fodor
Jerry Fodor defended the autonomy of the special sciences.
Higher-level kinds can support laws and explanations not practically reducible to physics.
Supervenience
Mental properties may supervene on physical properties.
No mental difference without some physical difference.
This expresses dependence without simple reduction.
Supervenience Is Not Explanation
Saying:
mental supervenes on physical
does not explain how.
It states a dependency pattern.
Still, it clarifies ontology.
Grounding
Persons may be grounded in:
- biological organization.
Grounding does not make them less real.
It locates dependence.
Real at Different Levels
A molecule is real at one scale.
A cell is real at another.
A person is real at another.
Reality can be hierarchically structured.
Fundamental Does Not Mean More Real
A quark may be more fundamental than a person.
But “more fundamental” does not necessarily mean:
more existent.
Dependence is not a degree of existence.
The Fallacy of Microphysical Privilege
The assumption:
smallest = most real
is not logically required.
Scale and reality are separate.
Explanatory Reality
If removing the concept:
person
destroys explanatory power, that is evidence the level captures something real.
Prediction
Knowing atomic positions is useless for predicting:
whether someone will attend a meeting.
Psychological concepts perform better.
Compression
“She went because she believed the train left at eight”
compresses an enormous physical description.
This is not merely convenience.
It identifies a stable causal pattern.
Consciousness as Data
Any complete worldview must explain:
the existence of experience.
Eliminating consciousness from ontology would leave unexplained the very evidence by which we know the world.
The Epistemic Asymmetry
Atoms are inferred.
Experience is directly present.
It would be strange to call inferred atoms real while dismissing the experience used to infer them.
But Directness Is Not Fundamentality
Again:
epistemic immediacy
does not prove metaphysical fundamentality.
Both can be real in different ways.
Persons and Moral Reality
Ethics operates at the level of:
- suffering,
- agency.
Molecules are not morally responsible.
Persons are.
This difference tracks higher-level organization.
Machine Persons?
If an artificial system develops:
- consciousness,
- memory,
- agency
it might deserve person-level ontology.
Biological composition would not necessarily matter.
The Philosophical Lesson
People and consciousness can be as real as atoms without being as fundamental as atoms.
Reality is not restricted to the lowest level.
Stable organized patterns can possess:
- causal,
- explanatory,
- experiential significance.
A complete ontology must accommodate both the physical building blocks and the wholes they constitute.
