Sherlock Holmes did not live at 221B Baker Street as a historical detective.

Yet millions of people know:

  • his habits,
  • his methods,
  • his companion.

A dream can contain a city that never existed.

A myth can shape a civilization.

How can something that is not literally real have real effects?

Different Senses of Reality

We need distinctions.

A fictional character is not:

physically instantiated as the described person.

But the character exists as:

  • text,
  • representation,
  • cultural object.

Reality has levels.

Fictional Truth

Within a story, some statements are true.

Example:

Sherlock Holmes is a detective.

Within Conan Doyle’s fiction:

true.

Sherlock Holmes is a professional astronaut:

false.

Fiction has internal structure.

Truth in Fiction

Philosophers study how statements can be true in fictional worlds.

This does not require the fictional entities to exist physically.

The truth is relative to a representational framework.

Possible-World Semantics

One approach treats fiction through sets of possible worlds compatible with the story.

A fictional statement is true if it holds in the relevant story worlds.

This is useful but technically complex.

Fictionalism

Fictionalism is a broader philosophical strategy.

We can use discourse that behaves as if entities exist without committing to literal ontology.

This approach appears in debates about:

Stories Are Physical Too

A novel has physical realization:

The story is not physically nonexistent.

Literal belief is not necessary for every emotion.

Paradox of Fiction

How can we feel genuine emotion toward entities we know do not exist?

Different theories answer through:

  • make-believe.

Belief Is Not Required

You need not believe:

the monster is real

to feel fear during a film.

Suspension of Disbelief

The phrase suggests we temporarily stop disbelieving.

But this is probably too strong.

We usually retain knowledge that the story is fictional.

We become imaginatively engaged.

Imagination allows representation without belief.

You can entertain:

while believing:

there is no dragon.

This cognitive separation is fundamental.

Narrative coherence can exceed factual coherence.

Memory as Narrative

Autobiographical memory constructs life stories.

We organize:

Looking backward, life can appear inevitable.

We connect events into a path.

This is related to hindsight bias.

This makes experience manageable.

But compression removes alternatives.

Institutional Fiction

Humans coordinate by acting as if certain abstractions are real.

Money, borders, roles

become causally effective through collective acceptance.

John Searle emphasized constitutive rules:

A piece of paper counts as money.

Social reality is rule-created.

Collective Intentionality

Institutional facts depend on shared recognition.

If everyone stops treating the currency as valid, its social function collapses.

Fiction vs Lie

Fiction is normally presented as fiction.

A lie presents falsehood as fact.

This avoids false binaries.

The Philosophical Lesson

Dreams, stories, myths, and fiction show that representation has its own reality.

A representation need not correspond literally to an external object to:

  • carry meaning,
  • cause emotion,
  • shape society.

Reality is richer than simple physical instantiation.
