Reality and Appearance

A straight stick looks bent in water.

The stick is straight.

The appearance is bent.

This simple example opens one of philosophy’s oldest distinctions:

appearance vs reality.

But appearances are not worthless.

They are the way reality becomes available to a perceiver.

Appearance

An appearance is:

how something seems.

It depends on:

  • object,
  • environment,
  • perceiver.

Appearances can be accurate or misleading.

Reality

Reality is:

how things are independently of a particular appearance.

This sounds simple.

But our access to reality always begins through some form of appearance or representation.

The Epistemic Problem

If every observation is mediated by:

  • senses,
  • instruments,
  • models,

how can we compare appearance with reality?

We never step completely outside representation.

Naive Realism

Naive realism says perception places us in direct contact with mind-independent objects and their properties.

The world itself is presented in experience.

Direct Realism

A more careful direct realism says perception is relational:

we perceive real objects directly under normal conditions.

Representational processing need not create an inner screen.

Indirect Realism

Indirect realism says we perceive internal representations caused by external objects.

The mind accesses reality through:

mental representation.

This creates the classic veil-of-perception problem.

Veil of Perception

If we only ever encounter internal representations, how do we know they resemble the external world?

The representational bridge becomes epistemically difficult.

Sense Data

Early twentieth-century philosophers sometimes proposed sense data:

immediate objects of perception such as patches of color.

Physical objects are inferred beyond them.

This view has largely lost dominance.

The Homunculus Problem

If an inner representation must itself be “seen” by an internal observer, regress begins.

Modern neuroscience avoids this.

Representations are states used by systems, not pictures shown to a little person.

Perception as Action

Enactive approaches emphasize perception as active engagement with the world.

Seeing is not passive image reception.

It involves:

  • movement,
  • sensorimotor expectations.

Gibson

James J. Gibson emphasized direct perception of ecological information.

Organisms detect affordances in structured environments.

This challenged overly internalist models.

Affordance

An affordance is an action possibility.

A chair affords:

sitting.

A handle affords:

grasping.

Perception is partly action-relative.

Predictive Perception

Predictive-processing theories model perception as inference.

The brain combines:

  • sensory evidence,
  • prior expectations

to infer likely causes.

Appearance is constructed but constrained.

Constructed Does Not Mean Invented

The brain constructs perceptual experience.

But construction uses real input.

A map is constructed.

It can still accurately represent terrain.

Optical Illusions

Illusions reveal hidden assumptions in perception.

A line looks longer.

A color looks different.

The system applies useful rules that fail in special conditions.

Illusions Are Scientific Tools

An illusion is not merely a trick.

It exposes:

  • priors,
  • processing stages,
  • heuristics.

Error reveals mechanism.

Müller-Lyer

Two equal lines with different arrowheads look unequal.

The visual system estimates spatial structure using contextual cues.

Appearance diverges from measurement.

Checker Shadow

A patch in shadow may appear lighter than an identical physical patch outside shadow.

The brain estimates reflectance under illumination.

Color appearance is relational.

Color Constancy

Objects maintain relatively stable perceived color despite changes in lighting.

This is usually useful.

Illusions exploit the same normalization process.

Perception Is Ecological

The visual system evolved to guide behavior.

It does not need to display raw physical variables.

It needs actionable structure.

Interface Metaphor

Perception can be compared to a user interface.

A desktop icon is not the transistor-level reality.

It provides useful access.

But the metaphor must not imply the world is arbitrary.

Hoffman

Donald Hoffman has argued controversially that evolution may favor fitness-relevant interfaces rather than veridical representation.

His stronger metaphysical conclusions are debated.

The general point—that perception is fitness-shaped—is less controversial.

Veridical Enough

An organism whose perception had no relation to external structure would fail.

Evolution requires enough reliable coupling for action.

So perceptual construction does not imply complete illusion.

Representation and Compression

The brain compresses massive sensory input into:

  • objects,
  • categories,
  • scenes.

Compression loses detail.

It preserves task-relevant structure.

Object Constancy

A table appears as one persistent object across:

  • viewpoints,
  • lighting conditions.

The retinal image changes constantly.

Perception infers stability.

Size Constancy

A person walking away does not appear to shrink to a tiny human.

The brain corrects for distance.

Appearance is already interpreted.

Depth

Retinas receive two-dimensional projections.

The brain infers depth using:

  • disparity,
  • motion,
  • perspective.

Three-dimensional appearance is constructed from cues.

Perceptual Inference

Hermann von Helmholtz described perception as unconscious inference.

Modern theories refine this idea.

Perception solves inverse problems.

Inverse Problem

Many world states can produce similar sensory input.

The brain must infer the most likely cause.

This makes perception fundamentally underdetermined.

Priors

Past experience shapes perceptual interpretation.

Ambiguous input reveals prior expectations strongly.

The Dress Again

Some people saw:

blue and black.

Others:

white and gold.

The image was identical.

Different assumptions about illumination changed appearance.

Is One Person Seeing Reality?

The physical pixels were fixed.

But perceived surface color depended on inferred lighting.

“Reality” can refer to different levels.

Measurement

Instruments can correct perceptual bias.

A photometer gives numerical data.

But instruments also require:

  • calibration,
  • interpretation.

There is no view from nowhere.

Scientific Objectivity

Objectivity is achieved not by eliminating perspective entirely.

It emerges through:

  • standardized methods,
  • cross-checking,
  • reproducibility.

Multiple perspectives correct one another.

Intersubjective Agreement

If many observers using independent methods converge, confidence rises.

Objectivity is often procedural.

Primary and Secondary Qualities

Locke distinguished:

Primary qualities

shape, motion.

Secondary qualities

color, taste.

The latter depend more obviously on perceivers.

Modern Complication

Even shape and motion are perceptually represented.

No experienced property is a raw copy.

But some properties may correspond more directly to observer-independent structure.

Scientific Image vs Manifest Image

The manifest image contains:

  • solid tables,
  • colors,
  • persons.

The scientific image contains:

  • fields,
  • atoms,
  • neural signals.

Are the two incompatible?

Not necessarily.

Levels of Description

A red apple can be described as:

  • molecular structure,
  • reflectance profile,
  • perceptual object.

Each level answers different questions.

Appearance as Real Phenomenon

Even a mistaken appearance is real as appearance.

If a stick looks bent, the seeming exists.

Error concerns what the appearance represents.

Hallucination

A hallucinated voice may not correspond to an external speaker.

But the auditory experience is a real event in the subject’s nervous system.

Appearance has its own ontology.

Dreams

Dreams create entire apparent environments.

They demonstrate that experience alone cannot guarantee external correspondence.

This feeds skepticism.

Yet Waking Experience Is Different

Waking perception is constrained by:

  • stable external causes,
  • shared observations,
  • action feedback.

Dreams lack the same robust coupling.

Reality Testing

Brains assess whether experiences are externally generated using:

  • consistency,
  • sensorimotor feedback.

Reality perception is itself a cognitive process.

Psychosis

Some conditions impair reality testing.

Internal thoughts or perceptions may be attributed externally.

This shows the reality/appearance boundary is neurally constructed.

Memory

Appearance is not limited to perception.

Memory can feel vivid while being inaccurate.

The mind represents:

past reality

through reconstruction.

False Memory

Confidence in memory does not guarantee accuracy.

This parallels perceptual illusion.

Subjective vividness is not an epistemic certificate.

Testimony

Social appearances matter too.

A person may appear trustworthy.

Charisma can mislead.

Epistemology extends beyond sensory perception.

Models

Scientific models are appearances in a broader representational sense.

They present reality under a conceptual form.

A model can reveal structure while distorting detail.

Map and Territory

The map is not the territory.

But a useful map preserves the relations relevant to navigation.

Representation is selective.

Idealization

Physics uses:

  • frictionless planes,
  • point masses.

These do not literally exist.

Idealization can improve understanding.

False Model, True Insight

A model can contain false assumptions yet capture real patterns.

Newtonian mechanics remains useful within limits.

Appearance and reality are not separated by simple true/false labels.

Phenomenal Reality

Some philosophers argue appearance itself is part of reality.

Conscious experience is not outside nature.

Then reality includes both:

  • world,
  • how the world appears to subjects.

Kant

Immanuel Kant sharply distinguished:

  • phenomena: things as they appear under human cognition,
  • noumena: things as they are in themselves.

His framework transformed the debate.

Phenomena

For Kant, experience is structured by conditions of cognition.

We do not receive the world completely unformatted.

Space, time, categories

organize experience.

Noumenon

The thing-in-itself is not simply a hidden object behind appearances.

It marks the limit of what can be known independently of our mode of cognition.

Kant’s exact interpretation is complex.

Transcendental Idealism

Kant’s view is not ordinary:

“everything is imaginary.”

The empirical world remains objective within shared conditions of experience.

Appearance Is Lawful

Appearances obey stable laws.

Science studies those laws.

Even if reality-in-itself exceeds human cognition, empirical knowledge remains possible.

Phenomenology

Phenomenology studies structures of appearance without immediately reducing them to hidden mechanisms.

This can complement neuroscience.

Reality and Perspective

Perspective does not destroy objectivity.

A mountain has different appearances from:

north, south.

They are different perspectives on one structure.

Perspective Dependence

Some truths are perspective-relative.

Example:

the cup is to my left.

This can be objectively true relative to a reference frame.

Relativity is not relativism.

Relativism

Epistemic relativism says truth itself may depend on framework.

Strong relativism faces problems:

If all truths are framework-relative, is that claim itself framework-relative?

Appearance and Deception

A deceiver can manipulate appearance.

This shows appearance is epistemically defeasible.

But deception presupposes a reality against which appearance is false.

Virtual Reality

Virtual environments create appearances through engineered signals.

The experience is real.

The represented environment is artificial.

Virtuality adds another layer rather than abolishing reality.

Augmented Reality

AR overlays digital objects on physical environments.

Which parts are real?

Physical, digital, social

layers can all have causal effects.

Ontology becomes plural.

Appearance in AI

Computer vision also builds internal representations from sensory input.

A classifier’s internal “appearance” need not resemble human phenomenology.

Representation can exist without conscious appearance.

Reality Is Not Given Raw

Neither humans nor machines access the world without transformation.

Sensors:

  • filter,
  • encode.

Knowledge begins with mediated data.

The Correspondence Question

How do we know representation corresponds to reality?

Through:

  • prediction,
  • action,
  • cross-modal agreement,
  • independent measurement.

Successful interaction is evidence of structural correspondence.

Structural Accuracy

A map can distort scale yet preserve topology.

Likewise perception may preserve:

action-relevant relations

without mirroring fundamental physics.

The Philosophical Lesson

Appearance is not the opposite of reality.

Appearance is one way reality becomes available to a perceiver.

The epistemic task is to determine where appearance:

  • tracks,
  • transforms,
  • misrepresents

what exists.
