Randomness Is Not Freedom

If determinism threatens free will, perhaps randomness saves it.

At first this seems plausible.

A random event is not predetermined.

So maybe an undetermined choice is free.

But this inference fails.

Randomness is not freedom.

The Coin Flip

A coin lands heads.

Was the coin free?

No.

Even if the outcome were genuinely indeterministic, the coin did not:

  • deliberate,
  • intend,
  • control.

Open alternatives are not enough.

Indeterminism

Indeterminism means:

the same prior conditions can lead to more than one physically possible outcome.

This creates branching possibility.

It says nothing about agency.

Freedom Needs Control

A free action normally requires that the action be attributable to:

  • the agent,
  • reasons,
  • goals.

Pure randomness reduces attribution.

Determined vs Random

A simplistic dilemma says:

Either the action is determined

or:

the action is random.

If both destroy freedom, free will seems impossible.

This is the classic dilemma for libertarian theories.

Is the Dilemma Exhaustive?

Libertarians deny that:

not determined

must mean:

mere chance.

They propose indeterministic but agent-controlled causation.

The burden is to explain this third category.

Random Noise in the Brain

Suppose a neural noise source randomly selects whether you choose:

tea

or:

coffee.

Would that make the choice freer?

Probably not.

It would make it less connected to your reasons.

Authorship

Freedom requires more than event origin.

It requires authorship.

The choice should express:

  • values,
  • deliberation,
  • identity.

Randomness lacks authorship.

Reason Responsiveness

Suppose evidence strongly favors option A.

A random process nevertheless selects B half the time.

This is not enhanced rational freedom.

It is degraded decision quality.

Control vs Openness

There is a tension:

more openness can mean less control.

More determination by reasons can mean more control but less metaphysical branching.

Free-will theories choose different balances.

Control Theory

A control system reduces randomness.

It stabilizes behavior around goals.

Examples:

  • thermostat,
  • autopilot,
  • animal motor control.

Control often means constraining possible outcomes.

Biological Agency

Organisms survive by reducing uncontrolled variation.

They:

  • regulate temperature,
  • maintain balance,
  • avoid hazards.

Agency is organized constraint.

Freedom as Organized Constraint

This sounds paradoxical.

But freedom often requires:

  • reliable memory,
  • stable values,
  • predictable causal links.

A person whose actions were random would not be more autonomous.

Randomness and Creativity

Creativity can use randomness to generate possibilities.

But evaluation selects useful outcomes.

Randomness supplies variation.

Agency supplies judgment.

Evolution

Mutation contains random or stochastic elements with respect to fitness.

Natural selection then filters variation.

Evolutionary creativity is not random overall.

Structure emerges from selection.

Search Algorithms

Randomized algorithms use chance strategically.

A random restart can escape local optima.

The algorithm remains goal-directed because randomness is embedded in control.

Controlled Randomness

Randomness can be a tool inside agency.

A person may flip a coin between equally acceptable options.

The free act may be:

deciding to use the coin.

The coin’s outcome itself is not authored.

Tie-Breaking

When reasons are exactly balanced, randomness can break ties.

This may be rational.

But tie-breaking is different from creating responsibility for the selected outcome.

Moral Luck

Suppose two people make the same reckless choice.

Chance causes harm in one case but not the other.

We often judge outcomes differently.

This is moral luck.

Randomness complicates responsibility.

Resultant Luck

Resultant luck concerns luck in consequences.

The driver who happens to hit a pedestrian may be judged more harshly than the equally reckless driver who does not.

The underlying choice may be identical.

Circumstantial Luck

People also face different circumstances.

One person encounters temptation.

Another never does.

Opportunity itself is partly luck.

Constitutive Luck

Your traits depend on:

  • genes,
  • upbringing.

These are not chosen.

This is constitutive luck.

It connects randomness and responsibility at a deeper level.

Causal Luck

Even the chain of causes leading to decisions includes factors beyond control.

This motivates skeptical views of ultimate responsibility.

Randomness Does Not Remove Luck

Indeterminism adds another form of luck.

If a crucial decision hinges on chance, authorship may weaken further.

Kane’s Self-Forming Actions

Robert Kane tries to place indeterminism inside genuine effort.

The agent struggles between competing reasons.

Either outcome expresses part of the person.

This is a sophisticated attempt to avoid mere randomness.

Torn Decisions

When motivations conflict, indeterminism may affect which process wins.

But because both processes are reason-guided, the result is not arbitrary in the same way as a coin flip.

Remaining Objection

Still:

Why this outcome rather than the other?

If no further reason determines it, luck remains at the margin.

Whether that margin undermines responsibility is disputed.

Probability and Responsibility

Suppose your values make:

helping = 70% likely, walking away = 30% likely.

If chance resolves the outcome, are you responsible for whichever occurs?

The answer depends on how much control probability itself reflects.

Dispositions

A person’s probability distribution may encode character.

A generous person is more likely to help.

The stochastic outcome may still emerge from stable dispositions.

This provides partial ownership.

But Probability Is Not Selection

Owning the distribution is not obviously the same as authoring the specific sampled outcome.

This is the remaining libertarian problem.

Quantum Randomness

Quantum theory is often invoked because some interpretations contain irreducible probabilities.

But replacing neural determinism with quantum randomness does not solve authorship.

The problem is conceptual, not merely physical.

Radioactive Decay Example

A radioactive atom may decay now or later.

No one thinks the atom chooses.

Indeterminacy alone has no agency.

Random Number Generator

A quantum random number generator can produce fundamentally unpredictable bits.

Still:

it has no free will.

This is a clean counterexample to:

indeterminism = freedom.

Unpredictability

A system may be unpredictable because of:

  • randomness,
  • chaos,
  • complexity.

None automatically imply free agency.

Predictability is not the right criterion.

Surprise

Humans can surprise others.

But a random generator is even more surprising.

Therefore surprise cannot define freedom.

Complexity

A highly complex stochastic system may remain non-agentic.

Complexity alone does not add authorship.

Agency requires organized goal-directed structure.

Goals

A system acts freely only in a meaningful sense if actions relate to:

  • goals,
  • reasons.

Chance can modulate selection.

It cannot replace goal structure.

Reasons Can Be Causes

Compatibilists emphasize this point.

If reasons cause action, that is not a defect.

It is precisely how rational control works.

The “Too Much Cause” Intuition

Some people feel:

if reasons determine the choice, freedom disappears.

But if reasons do not determine the choice enough, control disappears.

This creates a deep conceptual tension.

Freedom and Noise

Imagine an implant adding random noise to your decisions.

As noise increases, behavior becomes:

  • erratic,
  • disconnected.

Most people would say freedom decreases.

This is strong intuitive evidence against random freedom.

Mental Illness Analogy

Conditions that destabilize control can make behavior less predictable.

They do not necessarily increase responsibility.

Unpredictability may indicate impaired agency.

Reliable Character

A trustworthy person acts predictably because:

  • values are stable.

Predictability can be evidence of agency.

It need not be evidence against it.

Moral Praise

We praise someone who reliably helps others.

If helping occurred randomly, praise would be weaker.

Stable causal character supports responsibility.

Randomness Inside Learning

Exploration in reinforcement learning uses randomness to discover new strategies.

But the learning system evaluates consequences.

Again, randomness is subordinated to control.

Evolutionary Analogy

Mutation without selection produces noise.

Selection without variation stagnates.

Adaptive intelligence uses a balance.

Freedom may likewise require possibility plus control.

Is Some Randomness Necessary?

Not necessarily.

Compatibilists say no.

A deterministic reasons-responsive agent can be free.

Libertarians say some indeterminism may be necessary but not sufficient.

Necessary vs Sufficient

This distinction is crucial.

Even if:

indeterminism is necessary for libertarian freedom,

it does not follow that:

indeterminism is sufficient.

Randomness is at most an ingredient.

Agency Is Structured Causation

Agency involves:

  • representing alternatives,
  • evaluating outcomes,
  • acting from reasons.

This is organized causal architecture.

Randomness can occur within it.

It does not define it.

The Philosophical Lesson

Randomness opens possibilities.

Freedom requires ownership and control over action.

A random event can break a deterministic chain without creating a chooser.

That is why quantum indeterminacy, by itself, does not solve the free-will problem.
