Determinism

If the complete state of the universe were known at one moment, would the future already be fixed?
That is the central idea of determinism.
Determinism is often confused with:
- predictability,
- fatalism,
- control.
They are not the same.
Determinism Defined
A system is deterministic when:
given the complete state at time (t)
and:
the laws governing change,
only one future state is physically possible.
Formally, we can imagine:
[ S_{t+1}=F(S_t) ]
where the same state always evolves according to the same rule.
Determinism Is a Claim About Possibility
It does not say:
we know what will happen.
It says:
given exactly the same total conditions, a different future cannot occur.
This is a metaphysical or physical claim about the structure of change.
Predictability Is Different
A deterministic system may be impossible to predict in practice.
Reasons include:
- incomplete information,
- computational limits,
- chaos.
Therefore:
determinism ≠ predictability.
Chaos Again
A chaotic system can obey deterministic equations while being extremely sensitive to initial conditions.
Tiny uncertainty grows rapidly.
The future may be fixed but practically unknowable.
Weather
Weather models are largely deterministic at many scales.
Yet precise long-range forecasting is difficult.
Unpredictability does not imply metaphysical freedom.
Laplace’s Demon
Pierre-Simon Laplace imagined an intelligence that knew:
- all positions,
- all forces,
- all laws.
Such an intelligence could, in principle, calculate the entire future and past.
This became a symbol of classical determinism.
The Demon Is an Idealization
Real observers cannot know:
- infinite precision,
- every variable.
Nor is computation necessarily free.
Laplace’s demon illustrates determinism, not realistic forecasting.
Newtonian Mechanics
Classical mechanics encouraged deterministic thinking.
Given:
- positions,
- velocities,
- forces,
the equations often determine future motion.
But classical physics contains technical subtleties and idealizations.
Determinism Before Physics
The philosophical idea is older than Newton.
Ancient debates already concerned:
- fate,
- necessity,
- causation.
Physics gave the issue mathematical form.
Causal Determinism
A common version says every event is fully determined by:
- prior conditions,
- laws.
Human decisions are then part of the same causal order.
Psychological Determinism
One may also ask whether choices are determined by:
- desires,
- beliefs,
- character.
This is more specific than universal physical determinism.
Biological Determinism
Claims that genes rigidly determine behavior are often overstated.
Biological traits arise from interactions among:
- genes,
- environment,
- development.
Determinism does not imply simple one-factor causation.
Determinism Is Not Reductionism
A deterministic universe can still contain meaningful higher-level explanations.
We can explain behavior using:
- psychology,
- economics,
- biology.
Determinism does not require replacing every explanation with particle physics.
Determinism Is Not Fatalism
Fatalism says certain outcomes occur regardless of what we do.
Determinism says what we do is part of what causes outcomes.
This difference is crucial.
Example
Suppose:
if you study, you pass.
Under determinism, whether you study may itself be caused.
But studying still affects the result.
Fatalism would say:
you pass whether you study or not.
That is different.
Actions Matter
In a deterministic world:
actions have consequences.
Reasons alter choices.
Education changes behavior.
Causation does not make intervention pointless.
It makes intervention intelligible.
Counterfactuals
We can still say:
If she had taken the other road, she would have arrived later.
This counterfactual compares different conditions.
Determinism only says the exact same total past would not produce two futures.
“Could Have Done Otherwise”
This is where free-will disputes begin.
A compatibilist may mean:
If my reasons or desires had differed, I would have acted differently.
An incompatibilist asks:
Holding the entire past fixed, could I still have chosen otherwise?
Same Past, Different Future
Under strict determinism:
no.
The same complete past plus same laws yields one future.
This motivates incompatibilism.
Laws of Nature
Determinism assumes laws constrain evolution uniquely.
But what are laws?
Possibilities include:
- governing principles,
- descriptions of regularity.
Different philosophies of laws alter the metaphysical picture.
Humean Laws
A Humean view treats laws as descriptions of the best system summarizing events.
Laws do not push matter around.
They describe patterns.
This can soften the image of a universe “forced” by laws.
Governing Laws
Other views treat laws as genuinely governing or necessitating events.
Then determinism has a stronger modal character.
The distinction matters philosophically.
Initial Conditions
Even deterministic laws do not explain why the universe began in one state rather than another.
The future may be fixed relative to initial conditions.
The initial condition remains a separate question.
Randomness
If laws are probabilistic, multiple futures may be physically possible.
Quantum mechanics makes this relevant.
But indeterminism is not automatically free will.
Classical Probability
Probability can reflect ignorance in a deterministic system.
A coin toss may be deterministic at the microscopic level while unpredictable to us.
This is epistemic probability.
Ontic Probability
Quantum mechanics may involve irreducible physical probabilities, depending on interpretation.
This would be genuine indeterminism.
Interpretations differ.
Quantum Mechanics
Standard textbook quantum mechanics gives probabilistic outcome predictions.
But whether reality itself is fundamentally indeterministic depends partly on interpretation.
Many-Worlds
In Everettian or Many-Worlds interpretations, the universal wavefunction evolves deterministically.
All allowed branches occur.
This shows quantum theory does not straightforwardly imply indeterminism.
Bohmian Mechanics
Bohmian mechanics is deterministic.
Particles have definite trajectories guided by the wavefunction.
Again, quantum phenomena do not force one metaphysical conclusion.
Collapse Interpretations
Some collapse interpretations introduce genuinely stochastic events.
These are indeterministic.
But randomness still does not create agency by itself.
Randomness Is Not Authorship
If a neuron fires because of a random quantum event, did you become more free?
A random perturbation can make an action less controlled.
Freedom needs more than alternative possibility.
Determinism and Responsibility
If every choice follows from prior causes, can anyone deserve blame or praise?
This is the moral challenge.
Different theories answer differently.
The Consequence Argument
Peter van Inwagen developed the influential Consequence Argument.
Roughly:
if determinism is true, our acts are consequences of:
- laws of nature,
- events before we were born.
We control neither.
So how can we control the consequences?
No Choice About the Past
We cannot change:
what happened before our birth.
That seems obvious.
No Choice About Laws
We also do not control:
the laws of nature.
If present action follows necessarily from both, incompatibilists see freedom threatened.
Compatibilist Replies
Compatibilists challenge the inference from:
no control over past/laws
to:
no control over present action.
Control may not require changing the past.
It may require actions to depend on one’s current reasons.
Conditional Ability
Suppose:
If I had chosen tea, I would have poured tea.
The fact that I actually chose coffee does not eliminate this conditional capacity.
Compatibilists analyze “could have done otherwise” in such terms.
Categorical Ability
Incompatibilists demand more:
with the exact same past and laws, multiple actions had to remain possible.
Determinism denies this.
Determinism and Deliberation
If the future is fixed, why deliberate?
Because deliberation is one of the causal processes determining the future.
Your reasoning is not outside causation.
It is part of it.
The Deliberation Paradox
It can feel pointless to deliberate if only one outcome is possible.
But the outcome may be possible because deliberation occurs.
Removing deliberation changes the causal system.
Information Changes Action
Reasons are causes.
Learning:
the bridge is closed
can change your route.
This remains true under determinism.
Reasons as Physical Causes
A physicalist says a reason is realized in:
- neural states,
- memory.
Its causal role is therefore physical.
Determinism need not exclude rational explanation.
Rationality Under Determinism
A proof-checking program can deterministically follow valid inference.
Its determinism does not make the inference invalid.
Likewise, human reasoning can be causally determined and still responsive to evidence.
Mechanism vs Rationality
A process can be:
mechanistic
and:
rational.
These are different explanatory levels.
This point is central to compatibilism.
Character
Choices often express character.
But character has causes.
Do those causes make the choice less yours?
This depends on what “yours” means.
Self-Formation
People partly shape their future character through:
- habits,
- reflection,
- education.
These self-forming processes also have causes.
Determinism permits recursive self-modification.
Control Systems
A deterministic thermostat controls temperature.
A deterministic autopilot controls flight.
Control does not require indeterminism.
Human control is vastly richer but shares the basic idea.
Feedback
An agent senses:
- outcome,
- error.
It updates action.
Feedback creates adaptive control.
Deterministic systems can therefore be highly responsive.
Predicting Yourself
Could you predict your own decision perfectly before making it?
Self-reference complicates this.
A prediction can itself become part of the input to the decision.
Prediction and Defiance
Suppose a machine tells you:
“You will choose tea.”
You may choose coffee to prove it wrong.
Then the prediction altered the system.
Perfect self-prediction can create paradoxical feedback.
Computational Limits
Even if the universe is deterministic, no subsystem may be able to calculate every future event faster than reality unfolds.
This weakens simplistic clockwork imagery.
Determinism and Emergence
Higher-level agency can emerge in a deterministic world.
A person remains a real organized causal system.
Determinism does not imply that only fundamental particles are real.
Free Will as Emergent Capacity
Compatibilists may define freedom as a higher-level capacity for:
- deliberation,
- self-control,
- reasons responsiveness.
Such capacity is compatible with deterministic implementation.
Incompatibilist Objection
The incompatibilist replies:
all of this describes sophisticated causation.
It does not provide ultimate authorship.
If every aspect of the agent was fixed by prior causes, the agent could not truly originate the action.
Ultimate vs Practical Freedom
The debate therefore divides into:
Ultimate freedom
Could the exact same past yield another choice?
Practical freedom
Can the agent act according to reasons without coercion?
Determinism threatens the first more directly than the second.
Determinism and Identity
If your brain, history, and values cause your action, perhaps that is exactly what it means for you to cause it.
The threat arises only if the self must stand outside causation.
Cause of Self
But why are you this self?
You did not choose:
- initial biology,
- childhood.
This motivates hard incompatibilism.
The Philosophical Lesson
Determinism means:
the exact same complete conditions do not branch into multiple futures.
It does not mean:
- events are predictable,
- choices are irrelevant,
- deliberation is pointless.
The real free-will question is whether freedom requires escaping causal determination.
The Next Question

yes.
If every action is determined, ultimate responsibility disappears.
Others go further:
even randomness would not save it.
