Physicalism and Materialism

If thoughts depend on brains, perhaps the simplest conclusion is:

mind is physical.

This broad family of views is called physicalism.

Historically, the related term materialism was more common.

The modern distinction matters.

Materialism

Traditional materialism says reality is fundamentally made of matter.

This fit older physics well.

But modern physics includes:

  • fields,
  • spacetime,
  • quantum states.

“Matter” became too narrow.

Physicalism

Physicalism therefore uses a broader claim:

everything is physical,

or fully determined by the physical.

This leaves “physical” tied to our best physics rather than old-fashioned matter.

The Completeness of Physics

Physicalism is encouraged by the success of physics in explaining:

  • chemistry,
  • biology,
  • neural mechanisms.

No confirmed nonphysical force is needed in ordinary neuroscience.

Brain Dependence

Evidence strongly connects mental function to brain function.

Examples:

  • anesthesia,
  • lesions,
  • drugs,
  • stimulation.

Physicalism treats this dependence as expected.

Causal Closure

A central motivation is causal closure.

Physical events appear to have physical causes.

Neural activity causes muscle movement.

No additional nonphysical push is empirically required.

Identity Theory

One direct physicalist theory says:

mental states are brain states.

Just as:

lightning = electrical discharge,

perhaps:

pain = neural process.

This is mind–brain identity theory.

Type Identity

Type identity claims a mental kind corresponds to a physical kind.

For example:

pain = C-fiber firing

was a classic simplified illustration.

Actual pain neuroscience is far more complex.

Multiple Realizability Problem

Octopuses and mammals have different nervous systems.

Could both feel pain?

If yes, one mental type may have many physical realizations.

This challenges strict type identity.

Token Physicalism

A weaker claim says each particular mental event is physical even if mental categories do not correspond one-to-one with neural categories.

This preserves physicalism without strict reduction.

Functionalism as Physicalist-Friendly

Functionalism defines mental states by causal role.

A physical system realizes the function.

This is compatible with physicalism while allowing multiple substrates.

Supervenience

Mental properties supervene on physical properties if no mental difference can occur without some physical difference.

This is a common minimal physicalist commitment.

Possible-World Formulation

Roughly:

two worlds identical in every physical fact cannot differ mentally.

If one contains conscious pain and the other does not, supervenience fails.

Supervenience and Zombies

Philosophical zombies are designed precisely to challenge this.

They are imagined as physically identical to us but lacking consciousness.

If such worlds are metaphysically possible, physicalism is threatened.

Physicalist Reply

Physicalists often argue:

once all physical facts are genuinely fixed, consciousness is fixed too.

Our ability to imagine otherwise may reflect conceptual ignorance.

Reductionism

A reductive physicalist hopes mental phenomena can ultimately be explained in lower-level physical terms.

This is analogous to reducing:

temperature

to:

statistical molecular motion.

Bridge Laws

Classical reduction often requires links between higher- and lower-level concepts.

For mind, these mappings may be extremely complex.

One mental property may depend on large network organizations.

Nonreductive Physicalism

A nonreductive physicalist says:

mental states are fully physical

but:

higher-level mental explanations cannot be replaced usefully by low-level descriptions.

Higher-Level Reality

A hurricane is physical.

But “hurricane” is not one particle type.

It is a higher-level pattern.

Perhaps beliefs and minds are similar.

Real Patterns

If a higher-level pattern supports:

  • compression,
  • prediction,
  • causal explanation,

it can be real without being fundamental.

This gives mental vocabulary legitimacy.

Emergence

Physicalists often accept weak emergence.

Mental properties arise from complex organization.

Nothing nonphysical is added.

Yet the higher-level system displays new regularities.

Strong Emergence

Strong emergence claims genuinely new causal powers not derivable even in principle from physical structure.

This sits uneasily with strict physical causal closure.

Some property dualists embrace it.

Mental Causation Problem

If mental states are higher-level physical patterns, can they cause behavior?

A physicalist can say:

yes.

The mental cause and physical cause are descriptions of the same organized event at different levels.

Exclusion Problem

Jaegwon Kim highlighted a problem:

if a physical event already has a sufficient physical cause, is a separate mental cause redundant?

Nonreductive physicalism must explain how higher-level causation avoids overdetermination.

Multiple-Level Causation

Compare:

The window broke because:

  • the baseball hit it,
  • momentum transferred through the glass.

These explanations are not rival causes.

They describe one causal chain at different levels.

Mental causation may work similarly.

Functional Causation

A thermostat turns on heat because:

temperature fell below threshold.

This functional explanation is real even though every event is physical.

Higher-level control variables can be causally useful.

Physicalism and Meaning

A belief is about something.

Physicalism must explain semantic content using physical relations.

Candidates include:

  • causal covariance,
  • biological function,
  • learning history.

Naturalizing intentionality remains a challenge.

Physicalism and Consciousness

Consciousness is the hardest case.

Even if every report and behavior is physically explained, why should neural processing feel like anything?

This is the explanatory gap.

The Knowledge Argument

Mary’s room challenges the completeness of physical description.

If Mary learns a new fact when seeing red, perhaps physical knowledge did not include every truth.

Physicalists propose several responses.

Ability Hypothesis

Mary may gain an ability:

  • recognize red,
  • imagine red.

This does not require learning a new nonphysical fact.

Acquaintance Hypothesis

She may gain a new direct relation to an old physical fact.

Knowing by description differs from knowing by acquaintance.

Different epistemic routes need not imply different ontologies.

Phenomenal Concepts

Another physicalist response says conscious experience gives us special phenomenal concepts.

The apparent gap arises from how we think about experiences, not from a nonphysical property.

Explanatory Gap vs Ontological Gap

A physicalist may concede:

we do not yet understand how consciousness arises.

But lack of explanation does not prove ontological dualism.

Ignorance is not evidence of two substances.

Physicalism Is Not Behaviorism

Physicalism does not say only behavior is real.

It can take:

  • pain,
  • imagery,
  • consciousness

seriously as physical phenomena.

Reducing ontology does not require denying experience.

Physicalism Is Not Eliminativism

One can be physicalist while retaining mental concepts.

Eliminativism is a stronger view.

It claims some folk categories may disappear.

Eliminative Materialism

Paul and Patricia Churchland are associated with arguments that mature neuroscience may replace parts of folk psychology.

Whether categories like belief will disappear remains controversial.

Physicalism and Free Will

If the mind is physical, choices are physical events too.

This does not automatically settle whether free will exists.

Compatibilists argue physical causation and freedom can coexist.

Physicalism and Personal Identity

If selfhood is physically realized, personal continuity depends on physical and psychological organization.

No separate soul is required.

This fits process views of self.

The Hempel Dilemma

What does “physical” mean?

If it means:

current physics,

current physics is incomplete.

If it means:

future ideal physics,

the definition risks becoming vague.

This is sometimes called Hempel’s dilemma for physicalism.

Physicalism as Research Program

Despite definitional issues, physicalism often functions as a methodological commitment:

look for explanations continuous with the physical sciences.

This has been enormously productive.

Methodological Naturalism

Science generally searches for:

  • observable,
  • testable,
  • physically grounded

mechanisms.

This does not prove metaphysical physicalism.

But it aligns strongly with it.

Ockham’s Razor

Physicalism avoids positing extra substances.

If mental phenomena can be explained physically, simplicity favors one ontology.

But simplicity alone cannot decide truth.

The Cost of Physicalism

Its major burden is consciousness.

Physicalists must explain:

why certain physical organizations produce subjective experience.

At present, no consensus explanation exists.

The Strength of Physicalism

Its great strength is continuity.

Brains are biological systems.

Biology is chemical.

Chemistry is physical.

Mental life fits into one natural world.

The Philosophical Lesson

Physicalism says mind is not something added to nature from outside.

Mental life is realized within the physical world.

The challenge is not to show dependence.

That is already clear.

The challenge is to explain how physical organization becomes:

  • meaning,
  • thought,
  • experience.

The Next Question

One way to bridge physical diversity and mental function is to focus not on what a system is made of, but on what its states do.
