Chomsky and the Structure of Mind

Noam Chomsky transformed twentieth-century linguistics.
His central claim was not merely about grammar.
It was about mind.
Language, he argued, reveals an internal cognitive system capable of generating indefinitely many structured expressions from finite means.
This shifted linguistics toward the study of mental architecture.
Before Chomsky
Mid-twentieth-century psychology was strongly influenced by behaviorism.
Behaviorists emphasized:
- observable behavior,
- stimulus,
- response,
- reinforcement.
Language learning was often treated as habit formation.
Chomsky challenged this framework.
The Review of Skinner

Earlier Chomskyan theories distinguished:

Different surface sentences could share underlying relations.

Chomsky argued that children know structural principles not explicitly taught and not obviously inferable from sparse input.
This supported the idea of innate constraints.

Universal Grammar
Universal Grammar refers broadly to biologically given constraints on possible human grammars.
Different versions proposed different content.

A very small computational operation could, in principle, generate enormous syntactic complexity.
This fits the finite-rules theme.
Recursion
Chomskyan traditions often treat recursive hierarchical combination as central to language.
Some proposals have suggested that recursion may be a uniquely human core capacity.
This remains debated.
Human language probably depends on several interacting abilities.
I-Language
Chomsky introduced the idea of I-language:
internal, individual, intensional.
Language, in this view, is fundamentally a mental computational system.
Public languages such as English are secondary abstractions over individual grammars.
E-Language
By contrast, E-language refers to externalized language:

More controversial are claims about exactly which grammatical principles are innate and universal.
The debate continues.
The Philosophical Lesson
Language does not merely reflect the external world.
It also reveals something about the architecture of the organism that produces it.
To study grammar is partly to study mind.
But structure alone does not determine interpretation.
