Is Meaning Intrinsic or Assigned?

Does a symbol mean something because of what it is?
Or because some system assigns meaning to it?
A red traffic light means stop.
Smoke means fire.
A codon corresponds to an amino acid.
These examples look similar at first.
But their representational relations are different.
Some depend mostly on convention.
Some on causal connection.
Some on biological function.
Meaning may not have one single origin.
Intrinsic Meaning
If meaning were intrinsic, a sign would carry its meaning independently of any interpreter or convention.
The pattern itself would somehow determine what it means.
This idea is attractive.
It would make semantics objective and self-contained.
But most symbols do not work this way.
The Word “Tree”
Nothing in the visual form:
tree
forces it to refer to a woody plant.
Other languages use different words.
The relation is conventional.
Linguistic meaning is therefore not intrinsic to the mark.
Traffic Lights
Red means stop.
Green means go.
A different culture could, in principle, have chosen other colors.
The convention is arbitrary at origin, though heavily stabilized once established.
Traffic meaning is assigned.
Natural Signs
Smoke is different.
Smoke indicates combustion because fire often causes smoke.
The relation exists without human convention.
This is closer to an indexical or causal sign.
But does smoke “mean” fire?
That depends on how broadly we use the word meaning.
Causal Information
Smoke carries information about fire because the two are causally correlated.
Tree rings carry information about growth conditions.
Fossils carry information about ancient organisms.
These relations can exist without a conscious interpreter.
But Correlation Is Not Semantics
A shadow carries information about an object’s position.
Does the shadow have meaning?
Maybe in a weak informational sense.
Probably not in the same sense as a sentence.
Causal information and semantic meaning should not be automatically equated.
Assigned Meaning
Human symbols often gain meaning through:
- convention,
- intention,
- social practice.
A flag represents a nation because communities treat it that way.
Money has value partly because institutions and people collectively accept its role.
Meaning can be socially assigned.
Shared Assignment
Assigned does not mean individually arbitrary.
One person cannot decide that every stop sign now means accelerate.
Meaning works because assignment is coordinated.
Social convention creates objective constraints for participants.
Biological Meaning
Biology complicates the intrinsic/assigned distinction.
A codon participates in a stable mapping to amino acids.
No conscious agent assigned the code.
Yet the mapping is not a simple physical necessity either.
It evolved.
The Genetic Code
Consider a codon.
Its relation to an amino acid is implemented by:
- transfer RNAs,
- aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases,
- ribosomes.
The mapping depends on molecular machinery.
In this sense, meaning is system-relative.
Could the Genetic Code Have Been Different?
To some degree, yes.
Variants of the genetic code exist.
This suggests the mapping is not forced uniquely by chemistry.
Historical evolution stabilized one family of conventions.
Biology contains something convention-like without conscious convention makers.
Evolutionary Function
A signal can acquire significance because natural selection favors organisms that respond appropriately.
A warning coloration matters because:
- predators perceive it,
- avoidance behavior affects survival.
Meaning-like relations can emerge through evolutionary history.
Teleosemantics Again
Teleosemantics proposes that representation depends on biological function.
A frog’s visual system may represent a small moving object as prey because its perceptual machinery evolved to guide prey-catching behavior.
Misrepresentation is possible.
The system can snap at a non-food object.
Misrepresentation Matters
This is important.
If a signal relation is purely causal, error is hard to define.
But genuine representation appears capable of being wrong.
A frog can misidentify.
A map can mislead.
A belief can be false.
The possibility of error suggests normativity.
Normativity
Meaning often includes a distinction between:
- correct interpretation,
- incorrect interpretation.
This is normative.
Physical causation by itself simply happens.
Semantic systems introduce standards of correctness.
Where those standards come from is a deep philosophical problem.
Intentional Meaning
Human communication adds intention.
A speaker intends a sentence to mean something.
The listener attempts to recover that intention.
Meaning becomes linked to mental states.
This is stronger than mere statistical correlation.
Grice
Philosopher H. P. Grice analyzed meaning partly through communicative intentions.
Roughly, a speaker means something by intending an audience to recognize an intention.
This makes meaning fundamentally social and mental.
But it may not explain biological or machine representation.
Machines
Does a computer symbol have intrinsic meaning?
A memory pattern represents an integer because:
- hardware,
- software,
- conventions
treat it that way.
The bits do not intrinsically mean 42.
Machine semantics is system-relative.
Designed Systems
In engineered systems, meaning is often assigned by designers.
A protocol field means “destination address” because the specification says so.
But once implemented, the causal role becomes objective within the system.
Assigned meaning can become operationally real.
Emergent Meaning
Perhaps meaning can emerge.
No one assigns a meaning explicitly.
But a system develops stable signal-response relations through:
- learning,
- evolution,
- coordination.
Language itself changes this way.
Meanings evolve collectively.
Learning
A child learns that “dog” refers to a category.
No single moment creates the meaning.
Exposure, correction, and shared use stabilize it.
Meaning becomes embodied in a network of associations and practices.
Distributional Meaning
Modern language models learn patterns from usage.
Words occurring in similar contexts develop related internal representations.
This supports the idea that some semantic structure can emerge from relational patterns.
Whether this amounts to genuine understanding is a separate question.
Intrinsic Structure
Even if semantic meaning is not intrinsic, physical patterns do have intrinsic structure.
A bit string has length.
A waveform has frequency content.
A molecule has shape.
These properties constrain possible interpretations.
Meaning is not arbitrary fantasy imposed on structureless matter.
Constraints on Assignment
A map works because spatial relations correspond usefully to territory.
A thermometer works because its state correlates with temperature.
A language convention survives because speakers coordinate.
Assigned meaning must interact with structure and use.
Neither Purely Intrinsic Nor Purely Arbitrary
The best answer may be plural.
Some informational relations arise from causation.
Some meanings arise from social convention.
Some biological functions arise through evolution.
Some machine meanings arise through design.
The word “meaning” covers several related phenomena.
A Layered View
We can distinguish:
- physical structure
- causal information
- functional significance
- conventional semantics
- intentional meaning
Each layer adds requirements.
Treating them as identical produces confusion.
The Philosophical Lesson
Meaning rarely appears to be an intrinsic substance hidden inside a symbol.
But neither is it unconstrained invention.
Meaning emerges from relations among:
- structure,
- history,
- function,
- convention,
- interpreters.
It is relational without being unreal.
