Does Meaning Exist Inside a Message?

When we receive a message, it feels natural to say that the meaning is “inside” it.

A letter contains meaning.

A book contains meaning.

A recording contains meaning.

But does meaning literally reside inside the message?

The answer is more complicated.

A message carries structured patterns.

Meaning emerges through relations among:

  • the message,
  • the code,
  • the interpreter,
  • the context,
  • the world.

The Container Metaphor

Ordinary language encourages a container metaphor.

We say:

“the message contains information.”

“the sentence contains meaning.”

This is useful shorthand.

But it can mislead.

A message is not a box filled with semantic substance.

It is a pattern capable of being interpreted.

A Message Without a Reader

Imagine a tablet covered in symbols from an unknown civilization.

The marks remain.

Their syntax may remain.

But their meaning is inaccessible.

If meaning were entirely inside the marks, why would interpretation be necessary?

The example suggests that semantic meaning depends on more than physical inscription.

The Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone became interpretable because the same decree appeared in multiple scripts.

Researchers could connect unknown symbols to known language.

Meaning was recovered through relationships.

The stone did not change.

The interpretive context did.

Lost Languages

When a language disappears and no translation survives, inscriptions can become opaque.

The physical symbols remain perfectly preserved.

The semantic system may be lost.

This strongly separates message preservation from meaning preservation.

A Random String

Consider:

XQJ7P2L9

It is a message-like sequence.

Does it mean anything?

Perhaps:

  • a password,
  • a product code,
  • random noise.

Without context, we cannot tell.

Structure alone does not guarantee semantics.

Secret Codes

A ciphertext may be unreadable without a key.

The bits are present.

The semantic message is inaccessible.

The key supplies part of the interpretive relation.

Meaning is distributed across message and decoding system.

A Musical Score

A musical score contains symbols.

A trained musician can interpret them as:

  • pitch,
  • duration,
  • dynamics.

Someone unfamiliar with notation sees marks.

The score’s meaning depends on learned conventions.

Recipes

A recipe says:

“Fold the mixture gently.”

A skilled cook understands.

A novice may not.

The words are the same.

Interpretive competence changes practical meaning.

Meaning depends on background knowledge.

Technical Manuals

A circuit diagram can be deeply meaningful to an electrical engineer.

To another person, it may appear as lines and symbols.

The message has not changed.

The interpreter has.

Indexical Words

Words such as:

  • here,
  • now,
  • I,
  • you

cannot be fully interpreted without context.

“I am here now.”

Who is “I”?

Where is “here”?

When is “now”?

The sentence alone is incomplete.

Deixis

This dependence is called deixis.

Deictic expressions obtain reference from the situation of utterance.

Language therefore demonstrates directly that meaning cannot always be internal to the sentence.

Some meaning comes from context.

Speaker Intention

Suppose someone says:

“That’s brilliant.”

It may be genuine praise.

It may be sarcasm.

Literal wording remains the same.

Intention and tone change interpretation.

Pragmatics

Human communication goes beyond encoded literal semantics.

Pragmatics includes:

  • implication,
  • irony,
  • politeness,
  • indirect requests.

Listeners infer more than the sentence explicitly states.

Meaning is partly constructed during interpretation.

Gricean Implicature

Suppose someone asks:

“Did all the students pass?”

The reply:

“Some did.”

Logically, “some” does not exclude “all.”

Conversationally, listeners often infer:

not all.

This extra meaning comes from expectations about cooperative communication.

It is not simply encoded in the word “some.”

Meaning and Shared Knowledge

Communication relies on common ground.

Speakers assume shared knowledge.

A sentence may be extremely short because much context is already understood.

“Same place, eight?”

To friends with an established plan, this may be perfectly meaningful.

To an outsider, it is incomplete.

Compression Through Context

Shared context compresses communication.

The more sender and receiver already know together, the less must be explicitly stated.

This is a semantic form of compression.

Meaning can extend far beyond the literal message length.

Meaning and Reference

A message can refer to something in the world.

“That building is on fire.”

The sentence gains urgency because it connects to an actual building.

Meaning therefore involves relations outside the message.

Reference reaches beyond symbols.

Fiction

But meaning does not require a real-world referent.

“Frodo carried the Ring.”

The sentence is meaningful inside a fictional framework.

Semantic interpretation can connect to imagined worlds as well as physical ones.

Mathematical Meaning

The expression:

[ 2+2=4 ]

is meaningful within mathematical structures and conventions.

Its interpretation does not depend on one physical object.

Meaning can be abstract.

Machine Messages

A byte sequence can instruct a processor.

The processor interprets it according to architecture.

The “meaning” of the instruction is its operational role.

No conscious understanding is required for this functional sense.

Biological Messages

A molecular signal can trigger cellular response.

The signal’s significance lies in the response system.

A hormone is not intrinsically “telling” the cell something in human language.

Its informational role is realized through causal organization.

Is Meaning in the Receiver?

Perhaps meaning exists entirely in the interpreter.

But this goes too far.

Interpretation is constrained by the message.

A reader cannot plausibly interpret every sentence as anything whatsoever.

Meaning is relational, not arbitrary.

Constraint

The message contributes:

  • structure,
  • distinctions,
  • sequence,
  • formal cues.

The interpreter contributes:

  • code knowledge,
  • context,
  • background models.

Meaning emerges from interaction.

Meaning as Relation

A useful view is:

meaning is not located in one place.

It exists in relationships among:

  • signs,
  • systems,
  • users,
  • referents,
  • practices.

This avoids both extremes:

meaning entirely inside the message,

or

meaning entirely invented by the receiver.
