Can science investigate ghosts?

Miracles?

Telepathy?

Divine intervention?

The question sounds simple.

It is not.

Science is usually described as methodologically naturalistic.

It searches for explanations that can be tested through observation and experiment.

Does that automatically place the supernatural beyond science?

Not always.

The key issue is not the label “supernatural.”

It is whether a claim makes observable, testable differences.

What Does “Supernatural” Mean?

The word can refer to very different ideas.

  • beings outside ordinary physical reality,
  • divine action,
  • spirits,
  • miracles,
  • psychic phenomena,
  • violations of known natural laws.

Some claims are defined so vaguely that no observation could bear on them.

Others make specific predictions.

Those should not be treated the same way.

Science Tests Consequences

Science does not need to decide in advance whether something is natural or supernatural.

It asks:

If this claim were true, what should we observe?

Suppose someone claims:

“Whenever ritual X is performed, event Y occurs at a rate far above chance.”

That is testable.

We can define:

  • the ritual,
  • the event,
  • the expected baseline,
  • the conditions,
  • the statistical threshold.

The metaphysical interpretation may remain open, but the empirical effect can be studied.

Testability Comes First

A claim becomes scientifically approachable when it has:

  • observable consequences,
  • measurable outcomes,
  • failure conditions,
  • reproducible procedures.

Without these, there is no way for evidence to constrain belief.

The issue is methodological, not ideological.

Miracles

A miracle is often defined as an extraordinary event caused by divine action.

Science can investigate parts of such a claim.

Did the event happen?

Were records reliable?

Could known physical causes explain it?

Was there fraud?

Was there measurement error?

Science can evaluate the event.

It may be less able to establish the ultimate metaphysical cause.

Unexplained Does Not Mean Supernatural

Suppose doctors cannot explain a recovery.

That means:

the recovery is unexplained.

It does not logically mean:

the recovery was miraculous.

There may be:

  • unknown biology,
  • diagnostic error,
  • spontaneous remission,
  • incomplete records.

Absence of explanation is not evidence for one specific extraordinary explanation.

The God-of-the-Gaps Problem Again

If the supernatural is invoked only where current science lacks explanation, the claim is unstable.

As knowledge grows, the gap may close.

A stronger claim would need independent positive evidence, not only the absence of a natural explanation.

This is a general epistemic principle.

Reproducible Supernatural Effects

Imagine a psychic ability that could be demonstrated reliably under controlled conditions.

If the effect reproduced across laboratories, scientists would study it.

At first it might be called paranormal.

Eventually, if stable and measurable, it would become part of nature as science understands it.

This reveals something important.

“Natural” in science often means:

regular enough to investigate.

Would a Confirmed Psychic Effect Still Be Supernatural?

Perhaps not.

If telepathy were repeatedly demonstrated and obeyed stable rules, science would try to characterize those rules.

The phenomenon would become part of an expanded natural world.

This suggests the boundary between natural and supernatural may partly depend on whether phenomena are regular and investigable.

One-Time Events

What about a unique event?

Science can study singular events.

Supernovae.

Meteor impacts.

Historical eruptions.

The problem is not uniqueness itself.

The problem is whether enough evidence remains to distinguish explanations.

A one-time miracle claim can be investigated historically if traces survive.

But certainty may remain limited.

Historical Miracle Claims

Suppose an ancient text reports a miracle.

Researchers can ask:

  • When was the document written?
  • How close was the author to the event?
  • Are there independent sources?
  • Were alternative explanations considered?

These are legitimate historical questions.

But ancient testimony rarely provides experimental control.

The evidential standard differs from laboratory science.

Prayer Studies

Specific claims about intercessory prayer can be tested if they predict measurable outcomes.

For example:

“Patients who are prayed for recover more often under controlled conditions.”

Such studies have been performed in various forms.

Methodological problems include:

  • defining prayer,
  • controlling other prayer,
  • interpreting divine agency,
  • multiple outcomes.

Even a positive result would establish an association before proving a theological cause.

Psychic Research

Claims of:

  • telepathy,
  • precognition,
  • psychokinesis

have been studied experimentally.

The central scientific requirements remain:

  • preregistration,
  • blinding,
  • control of sensory leakage,
  • replication,
  • independent confirmation.

Extraordinary claims require methods robust enough to eliminate ordinary explanations.

Fraud and Self-Deception

Paranormal claims face a special methodological challenge.

Humans are vulnerable to:

  • confirmation bias,
  • selective memory,
  • suggestibility,
  • coincidence.

Some demonstrations also involve deliberate deception.

Therefore strong controls are essential.

Magicians and illusion experts can sometimes help detect weaknesses scientists miss.

Coincidence

Rare events happen.

A person dreams of someone and then receives unexpected news about them.

The event feels meaningful.

But with billions of dreams and millions of daily events, striking coincidences are inevitable.

Before invoking extraordinary causes, base rates matter.

Probability can make unlikely-looking events ordinary at population scale.

Regression to the Mean

A person becomes extremely ill.

They try an unusual treatment.

They improve.

Perhaps the treatment worked.

But extreme states often move closer to average naturally.

This is regression to the mean.

Without control groups, spontaneous fluctuation can be mistaken for supernatural or alternative intervention.

Placebo and Expectation

Belief can alter:

  • pain,
  • stress,
  • subjective symptoms.

These effects are real.

But they do not validate the metaphysical explanation attached to a treatment.

A ritual can produce psychological change without supernatural causation.

Mechanism matters.

Natural-Law Violation

Some define miracles as violations of natural laws.

This raises a conceptual problem.

If a well-confirmed event contradicts a supposed law, perhaps the law was incomplete.

Science normally revises laws rather than saying reality violated them.

So “violation of natural law” is not always easy to distinguish from “new physics.”

Hume on Miracles

David Hume argued that testimony for a miracle should be weighed against the enormous prior evidence supporting regular natural laws.

His point is probabilistic.

We should ask:

Which is more likely?

That a law of nature was violated?

Or that testimony, perception, or memory failed?

The argument does not make miracles logically impossible.

It raises the evidential burden.

Extraordinary Evidence

An extraordinary claim should have evidence strong enough to overcome more ordinary alternatives.

A blurry photograph is weak evidence for a radically new entity.

A reproducible laboratory effect would be much stronger.

The requirement is proportionality.

Confidence should scale with evidential strength.

Methodological Naturalism

Why does science normally search for natural explanations?

Because natural explanations are:

  • testable,
  • repeatable,
  • comparable,
  • revisable.

This is a methodological strategy.

It does not by itself prove that supernatural reality is impossible.

Science restricts itself to what its methods can evaluate.

Philosophical Naturalism

Philosophical naturalism goes further.

It claims reality is entirely natural.

That is a metaphysical position.

Science may support naturalistic explanations strongly in many domains.

But methodological success alone does not logically prove a universal metaphysical thesis.

The distinction should remain clear.

Can Science Disprove Every Supernatural Claim?

No.

A claim can be formulated so that it has no observable consequences.

For example:

“a transcendent being exists outside spacetime and never affects anything observable.”

Science has no experimental access to such a claim.

But lack of disproof is not evidence for truth.

Untestability cuts both ways.

Can Science Confirm Every Supernatural Claim?

Also no.

Even if an extraordinary effect is observed, identifying the ultimate cause can remain difficult.

Suppose an apparently impossible signal appears.

Possibilities include:

  • unknown physics,
  • hidden mechanism,
  • error,
  • fraud,
  • supernatural cause.

Observation alone may not uniquely select among them.

Underdetermination returns.

Science Expands the Natural

Historically, many phenomena once attributed to supernatural causes became naturalized.

Lightning.

Disease.

Eclipses.

Mental illness.

This does not prove every supernatural claim will disappear.

It does show that unexplained phenomena often become understandable without supernatural assumptions.

A Practical Principle

A useful principle is:

Science can investigate any claim that produces observable, measurable, and discriminating consequences, regardless of what label is attached to it.

If no such consequences exist, science may have nothing to test.

The limitation belongs to the method, not to a declaration that the claim is meaningless.

The Next Question

As science explains more, some people feel that the world becomes less magical.

A rainbow becomes refraction.

Lightning becomes electrical discharge.

Love becomes neural chemistry.

Does explanation drain wonder from nature?

Or can understanding deepen it?
