But a second system developed underneath the first.
Attention became business.
Many platforms earn revenue by keeping users engaged long enough to show advertising or deepen participation in the platform ecosystem.
This creates an optimization problem.
What makes people stay?
Not necessarily what makes them wiser.
What holds attention can be outrage.
Fear.
Novelty.
Status.
Conflict.
Beauty.
Humor.
Tribal identity.
The algorithm does not need hatred.
It needs measurable engagement.

Harm can emerge from optimization.
The objective function matters.
Social media also quantifies social approval.

Human beings have always cared about reputation.
Now reputation arrives as numbers.
This changes psychology.
A vague sense of social acceptance becomes metric.
Metrics invite comparison.
Comparison invites optimization.
People learn which version of themselves performs best.
Identity becomes partially shaped by feedback.
This is not entirely fake.
All social life involves performance.
But digital performance is unusually persistent and measurable.
The platform remembers.
The audience can be enormous.
The response arrives immediately.
Social media also collapses contexts.
A joke intended for friends can be seen by employers.
A political opinion by relatives.
A photograph by strangers.
Human social behavior evolved with separate audiences.
Digital networks merge them.
This creates self-censorship or accidental exposure.
The individual must manage incompatible identities in one public space.
This is cognitively expensive.
The medium also rewards compression.
Complex issues become short posts.
Nuance competes poorly with certainty.
A careful argument requires attention.
An accusation can fit in one sentence.
This does not make thoughtful communication impossible.
It changes incentives.
Political discourse becomes vulnerable to emotional simplification.
Tribalism thrives.
An opposing group can be represented by its worst example.
Algorithms personalize information.
This is useful.
Nobody can read everything.
But personalization creates invisible editing.
Two citizens may inhabit different informational worlds while believing they are seeing reality.
This weakens shared factual ground.
Democracy becomes difficult when disagreement concerns not values but basic events.
Social media also enables surveillance by peers.
People police one another.
Old statements are rediscovered.
Screenshots preserve mistakes.
Moral accountability can improve.
So can mob punishment.
The legal system has procedures.
Online crowds often do not.
Context can vanish.
Punishment can exceed offense.
This reveals a tension between justice and spectacle.
Platforms also gave individuals unprecedented broadcasting power.
A witness can document abuse instantly.
A scientist can explain research directly.
A small artist can reach global audiences.
The same infrastructure that spreads misinformation spreads correction.
Technology does not choose a moral side.
It magnifies human behavior.
The deeper issue is incentive design.
If the system rewards attention, people will learn to manufacture attention.
If outrage is profitable, outrage becomes industry.
This does not mean users are helpless.
Norms can change.
Platforms can redesign.
Regulation can alter incentives.
Individuals can curate behavior.
But the battle is unequal.
A person brings one brain.
A platform can test billions of interactions.
The digital age therefore creates a new political question.
Who has the right to engineer attention?
Earlier states competed for obedience.
Markets competed for money.
Social platforms compete for minutes of consciousness.
The scarce resource is no longer information.
It is the human mind.
