All contributed.
The architecture mattered.
Instead of one centralized network controlling everything, interconnected networks could communicate through shared protocols.
This made growth flexible.
The internet became a network of networks.
That structure is technically elegant.
It is also politically important.
Distributed systems are difficult to control completely.
The early internet carried an ideal of openness.
Anyone could publish.
Anyone could connect.
Knowledge could move beyond traditional gatekeepers.
Libraries became searchable from bedrooms.
People could learn from distant experts.
Small creators could reach global audiences.
Diasporas could remain connected.
The internet lowered the cost of participation in public culture.
But lowering the cost of speaking also lowered the cost of lying.
Spam.
Fraud.
Propaganda.
Harassment.
Conspiracy theories.
Information abundance created an attention problem.
When publication is scarce, access is difficult.
When publication is abundant, selection becomes difficult.
The scarce resource shifts from information to attention.
This changes power.
Search engines decide what appears first.
Platforms decide what gets recommended.
Algorithms become gatekeepers.
The old editors do not disappear.
They become software.
The internet also changes identity.
A person can exist under multiple names.
Join communities disconnected from local geography.
Experiment with personality.
Maintain relationships across distance.
This can be liberating for people isolated in their immediate environment.
It can also fragment identity.
Online life encourages performance.
Profiles become curated selves.
The boundary between private and public weakens.
The internet also creates memory without natural forgetting.
A mistake can remain searchable for years.
A photograph can be copied indefinitely.
A comment can survive its context.
Human social life evolved with forgetting.
Digital systems remember cheaply.
This creates a new ethical problem.
Should everything that can be preserved be preserved?
The internet also reconfigures economics.
Digital goods can be copied at near-zero marginal cost.
Software can scale globally.
Platforms benefit from network effects.
The more people use a network, the more valuable it may become.
This can produce enormous concentration of power.

Train systems indirectly through behavior.
Participation becomes labor-like without always being recognized as labor.
Attention and data become economic resources.
The individual is both customer and input.
This is a new relationship between person and market.
The deepest change may be psychological.
The internet makes the world continuously present.
War.
Disaster.
Celebrity.
Friend.
Work.
Entertainment.
Argument.
All appear on one screen.
Human attention evolved for local environments.
Now it receives planetary stimuli every minute.
We became globally informed before becoming globally emotionally equipped.
The internet connected humanity.
It did not teach humanity how to live while permanently connected.
That would become the next problem.
