For most of human history, economic production depended on muscle.
Human muscle.

Wind.
Water.
Fire provided heat, but not large-scale mechanical power in the modern sense.
The Industrial Revolution changed the energy basis of civilization.
Coal.
Steam.
Machines.
Factories.
Later electricity and oil.
Humanity learned to convert stored energy into mechanical work at unprecedented scale.
This changed everything.
Production increased.
Transportation accelerated.
Cities expanded.
Goods became cheaper.
Population grew.
Life expectancy later improved.
Material abundance increased dramatically over the long run.
But industrialization also created brutal working conditions.
Long hours.
Dangerous factories.
Child labor.
Pollution.
Urban crowding.
Class conflict.
Technological progress and human suffering arrived together.
This is not contradiction.
It is transition.
A system can increase total wealth while distributing early costs severely.
Industrialization also changed time.
Agricultural work follows seasons and daylight.
Factories follow clocks.
The machine does not care about sunrise.
Work becomes scheduled.
Measured.
Standardized.
Human labor is synchronized to industrial rhythm.
This creates modern discipline.
Arrive at nine.
Leave at five.
Shift begins.
Shift ends.
Time becomes economically priced.
The worker sells hours.
This is a profound transformation of consciousness.
A day is no longer merely lived.
It is budgeted.
The factory also changes skill.
Some crafts required years of training.
Industrial machinery could divide production into repeatable tasks.
This increased efficiency.
It could also reduce worker autonomy.
The laborer becomes part of a process designed elsewhere.
Marx later focuses on this alienation.
The worker produces an object but does not own it.
Performs a task but does not control the system.
Industrialization therefore creates a new class politics.
Capital owners.
Wage laborers.
Managers.
Industrialists.
Urban working classes.
Old aristocratic hierarchies do not simply disappear.
They are joined by new economic structures.
The Industrial Revolution also transforms nature into input.
Coal becomes energy reserve.
Rivers become power sources.
Land becomes industrial site.
Minerals become strategic resources.
The scale of extraction grows.
This begins the modern environmental problem.
Preindustrial societies altered ecosystems.
Industrial civilization alters planetary systems.
Carbon dioxide accumulates.
Air pollution increases.
Landscapes transform.
Technological power becomes geological force.
Humanity enters what later scholars describe through concepts such as the Anthropocene, though exact definitions and boundaries remain debated.
The important point is scale.
We become capable of changing conditions no individual intends to change.
Industrialization also shrinks distance.
Railways.
Steamships.
Telegraph.
Markets integrate.
News travels faster.
Migration accelerates.
The world becomes economically compressed.
Again, connectivity creates wealth and vulnerability.
A financial crisis can travel.
A supply disruption can spread.
Industrial civilization becomes network civilization.
The Industrial Revolution is often praised as the engine of modern prosperity.
That is correct.
It is also the origin of many modern risks.
Climate change.
Mass industrial warfare.
Urban alienation.
Fossil-fuel dependence.
Technological unemployment.
The same engine creates both.
This is the central moral problem of technology.
Power does not arrive pre-labeled as progress.
Progress depends on how power is governed.
