Neanderthals Were Not Primitive

For a long time, Neanderthals were used as an insult.
The word became shorthand for stupidity, brutality, and evolutionary failure.
That image tells us more about modern human arrogance than about Neanderthals.
Neanderthals were a successful human lineage that lived across large parts of Europe and western Asia for hundreds of thousands of years. They survived repeated climatic changes, hunted large animals, made sophisticated tools, controlled fire, cared for injured group members, and adapted to difficult environments.
They were not failed Homo sapiens.
They were Neanderthals.
Their bodies were different from ours in ways suited to their own history. They were generally robust, with powerful musculature and distinctive skull anatomy. Their brains were large, though brain size alone tells us little about intelligence.
What matters is behavior.
Archaeological evidence shows that Neanderthals manufactured complex stone tools, used adhesives, exploited diverse food sources, and sometimes used pigments or collected unusual objects. Evidence concerning symbolic behavior has grown steadily, though individual claims are debated.
The broader picture is now difficult to reconcile with the caricature of a mindless cave dweller.
One of the most humanizing discoveries came from genetics.
Many living people outside sub-Saharan Africa carry a small percentage of Neanderthal ancestry.
Our ancestors met them.
And sometimes they had children together.
The boundary between “us” and “them” was biologically permeable.
This fact changes the story of human evolution.
It is no longer accurate to imagine modern humans marching out of Africa and replacing every other human form without contact.
The history was messier.
Populations met, competed, exchanged genes, and perhaps exchanged knowledge.
Human evolution resembles a braided river more than a straight line.
Neanderthals also challenge the way we define intelligence.
Modern people often judge intelligence by achievements produced within enormous cultural systems.
A scientist uses mathematics invented by earlier generations.
An engineer uses accumulated knowledge.
A student learns to read from a society that already possesses writing.
Neanderthals did not inherit libraries, universities, digital networks, or industrial tools.
Their abilities should be judged in relation to the problems they actually faced.
Surviving Ice Age environments without modern infrastructure demanded extraordinary practical knowledge.
Where were animals likely to move?
Which stone fractured properly?
How could fire be maintained?
Which plants were useful?
How should a group care for an injured member?
This was knowledge embedded in bodies, landscapes, and communities.
The extinction of Neanderthals remains debated.
Climate shifts, small population sizes, competition with Homo sapiens, disease, demographic disadvantages, and assimilation through interbreeding may all have contributed.
The word “extinction” itself can be misleading if some Neanderthal ancestry survives within us.
Part of their population disappeared as a distinct lineage.
Part of it was absorbed.
That makes human identity even less pure than national myths usually prefer.
We contain traces of other human histories.
Neanderthals also force us to confront a moral question.
If a Neanderthal infant were somehow born today and raised within modern society, how would we treat that child?
As human?
As another species?
As a person with rights?
Our answer would reveal how much we think moral worth depends on biological classification.
Evolution gives us continua.
Ethics often demands boundaries.
The two do not always align neatly.
Perhaps the deeper lesson is that humanity is not a single anatomical checklist.
It is a cluster of capacities: social bonds, suffering, memory, communication, learning, planning, attachment, and forms of selfhood.
Neanderthals likely possessed many of these.
Their disappearance should therefore not be treated as the removal of a primitive obstacle on the road to us.
It was the loss of another way of being human.
For most of our species’ existence, Homo sapiens shared the world with other humans.
Today we do not.
That solitude is unusual.
We are the last surviving human lineage.
The next question is therefore unavoidable:
