The First Hominins

There was no morning on which an ape gave birth to a human.
Evolution does not work in jumps between the categories we use today.
Populations change gradually.
Lineages diverge.
Traits accumulate at different rates.
Only much later do scientists look backward and draw names around parts of the branching tree.
The term “hominin” refers to humans and the extinct species more closely related to us than to chimpanzees.
The earliest members of this lineage lived millions of years ago in Africa.
They did not look like modern humans.
They were not trying to become modern humans.
They were organisms adapted to their own environments.
This is important because popular images often show human evolution as a parade.
A hunched ape gradually straightens until a modern man appears at the front.
The image is memorable and deeply misleading.
Human evolution is a branching tree.
Different hominin species sometimes existed at the same time.
Some lineages overlapped geographically.
Some disappeared without leaving descendants.
Others contributed to later populations.
There was no single file.
The earliest hominins are difficult to reconstruct because the fossil record is incomplete.
Bones are rare.
Fossilization is rare.
Discovery is rare.
Interpretation changes as new evidence appears.
Scientists therefore work with fragments: teeth, skull pieces, limb bones, footprints, geological context, and comparisons with living primates.
From these fragments, a broad picture emerges.
One of the most important early changes involved locomotion.
Several early hominins show evidence associated with increased bipedalism.
Walking on two legs did not instantly create a human body.
Early species retained combinations of traits useful for climbing and for terrestrial movement.
Evolution often produces mosaics rather than complete redesigns.
A species can be transitional without being halfway toward a predetermined destination.
It is simply adapted in a way that contains features we later recognize as important.
Brain size also did not expand first.
This surprises many people.
Bipedalism has deep roots in the hominin lineage, while the dramatic expansion of brain size came much later.
The sequence matters.
It means that walking upright was not the result of a large modern-style brain deciding to free the hands for technology.
Bodies changed before our distinctive cognitive capacities emerged.
Human evolution repeatedly breaks intuitive stories like this.
We prefer explanations where everything arrives together.
Nature is messier.
Diet changed.
Environments shifted.
Climate varied.
Different species experimented with different combinations of anatomy and behavior.
Some lineages developed large chewing adaptations.
Others became more dependent on tools.
Some dispersed into new regions.
There was no guarantee which branch would persist.
The first hominins also complicate the concept of “human.”
Where should humanity begin?
With our species?
With the genus Homo?
With habitual bipedalism?
With stone tools?
With symbolic behavior?
With language?
No single answer captures everything.
Biology gives us gradients while language demands categories.
This is more than a technical problem.
The same difficulty appears whenever humans attempt to define themselves sharply.
We want a boundary that says: before this point, animal; after this point, human.
Evolution dissolves the line.
Our distinctiveness emerged cumulatively.
This can feel threatening only if dignity depends on biological discontinuity.
It does not have to.
A symphony is made of ordinary vibrations.
A thought is produced by biological tissue.
A human being can have moral significance without requiring a magical break in ancestry.
The first hominins matter precisely because they show continuity.
They walked landscapes without knowing that millions of years later their bones would be used to reconstruct a story about human origins.
They survived droughts, predators, injuries, births, and social conflicts.
Their lives were immediate.
Our interpretation is retrospective.
We call them ancestors or relatives.
They simply lived.
This may be the most respectful way to imagine them.
Not as primitive drafts of us.
Not as rungs on a ladder.
But as successful organisms occupying worlds that no longer exist.
From some of those populations came later hominins.
Bodies became increasingly adapted to upright walking.
Hands became available for new forms of manipulation.
The next transformation would begin with an apparently simple act:
standing and moving on two legs.
