Raf: What We Cannot Let Go
Published:
Some things are hard to throw away.
Not because they are still useful.
Not because we believe we will need them again one day.
We just cannot let them go.
We keep some people inside us in the same way we keep an old photograph, a forgotten message, or a box we have not opened for years. They are no longer part of our daily life, but they are still there. They become quieter. They collect dust. Still, they do not completely disappear.
Deeperise & Jabbar’s Raf always makes me think about this.
Not about the big fight at the end of a relationship, but about the silence that comes after it. The last sentence we never said. The perfect answer that comes to our mind only after the door has already closed.
Some goodbyes never really feel complete.
Life continues. We go to work. We talk to friends. We walk through different streets. We listen to new songs and meet new people. From the outside, everything looks normal.
But somewhere inside, there is a small shelf.
A few unfinished sentences are still waiting there.
“What if we had stayed a little longer?”
“Could things have been different?”
“Did you ever really understand me?”
As time passes, the answers become less important. But somehow, the questions remain.
Maybe missing someone is not always about wanting them back. Sometimes it is simply remembering the shape of the empty space they left behind.
Then one day, a song begins to play.
Suddenly, your hand touches that old shelf.
You remember the light of an evening, the smell of a street, or a small expression on someone’s face. We do not really choose what our memory decides to keep.
Then the song ends.
Life continues from where it stopped.
And the shelf stays there.
Maybe that is where some things belong.
Not in the center of our lives.
Not completely outside them.
Just close enough to reach,
and far enough to believe we have forgotten.
