How to Play
- Four players form two partnerships: You + Partner versus two opponents.
- One suit is selected as Hokm (trump). Trump cards outrank cards from the other suits.
- The first card in each trick establishes the lead suit.
- If you hold at least one card of the lead suit, you must follow suit.
- If you cannot follow suit, you may play any card, including a trump.
- The highest trump wins the trick; if no trump is played, the highest card of the lead suit wins.
Partnership Play
Your goal is not simply to win every trick personally. A card that loses to your partner can still be an excellent play if it preserves a valuable trump or gives your team control of the next lead. Watch which suits players fail to follow, because that reveals information about their remaining cards.
Strategy Tips
- Do not spend high trump cards on tricks your partner is already likely to win.
- When an opponent cannot follow a suit, remember that the player may be able to trump that suit later.
- Leading a suit repeatedly can remove opponents' cards in that suit and prepare later winners.
- Coordinate indirectly with your partner through the cards you lead and the strengths you reveal.
Game-Theory Connection
Hokm combines partnership incentives, hidden information and sequential play. Players must reason from partial observations, update beliefs about unseen cards and choose actions that benefit a team rather than only themselves. This makes it useful for discussing signaling, cooperation, imperfect information and coordinated strategy.
