How to Play

  1. Choose a bet and press Deal.
  2. Your goal is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21.
  3. Number cards use face value, J/Q/K count as 10, and an Ace counts as 1 or 11 whenever possible.
  4. Hit takes another card. Stand ends your decisions and lets the dealer play.
  5. Double doubles the stake, gives exactly one additional card, and then automatically stands.
  6. The dealer follows a fixed policy: draw to 16 and stand on 17 or higher.

Understanding Outcomes

If your total exceeds 21, you bust and lose immediately. If the dealer busts while you remain at 21 or below, you win. Otherwise, the higher legal total wins; equal totals are a push. A natural blackjack made with an Ace and a ten-value card is especially strong because it reaches 21 with only two cards.

Decision Strategy

  • Compare the strength of your current hand with the dealer's visible card.
  • Low totals usually benefit from taking another card, while high totals create a greater bust risk.
  • A weak dealer up-card can justify more conservative play because the dealer may bust.
  • The strategy hint is a teaching aid based on simplified basic-strategy intuition; it is not gambling advice.

Decision-Theory Connection

Blackjack illustrates sequential decision-making under uncertainty. You know your own hand and one dealer card, but not the dealer's hidden card or future draws. Each action trades expected reward against risk. This makes the game useful for discussing conditional probability, expected utility, information, stopping decisions and how optimal actions depend on the state rather than on a single fixed rule.
