The Power Of First Impressions And Energy
Published:
Sometimes we meet a person and immediately feel comfortable. Other times, something feels wrong before we can explain why. People often describe this as “energy.” I think part of it is simply fast perception. Our minds notice tone of voice, facial expression, posture, distance, eye contact, timing, and many other small signals.
We compare them with past experiences before conscious reasoning has finished. This can produce a strong first impression. The feeling deserves attention. It does not deserve complete authority. First impressions can protect us when we notice a real warning sign.
They can also be distorted by stereotypes, mood, anxiety, or an accidental similarity to someone from our past. That is why I prefer using intuition as an early signal, not a final judgment. Notice the feeling. Then watch behavior. Does the person keep promises?
Do their actions match their words? How do they treat people from whom they need nothing? Time gives better evidence than a first meeting. Still, I do not ignore the first feeling completely. Sometimes the mind notices something before it has found the words. The art is learning when to listen and when to question it.
