Distancing Yourself From The Truth

Imagination can protect us for a while. When reality becomes uncomfortable, the mind creates alternatives. Maybe the problem will solve itself. Maybe the other person will suddenly change. Maybe the decision does not need to be made yet.

These thoughts can provide temporary relief. Sometimes we need a little relief. The danger begins when imagination becomes a permanent replacement for reality. A difficult truth does not disappear because we stop looking at it. Often, it becomes more expensive.

An ignored problem grows. A conversation becomes harder. A decision gets made by time instead of by us. I have learned that truth can feel worse in the short term and better in the long term. Knowing where we stand may hurt, but uncertainty mixed with denial can last much longer.

This does not mean we should become cold or brutally direct with ourselves. Some truths need time. Some situations need emotional distance before we can face them clearly. The goal is not to force understanding. It is to avoid building a comfortable home inside something we know is not real.

Imagination is a beautiful place to visit. Reality is where our decisions have to live.
